The Induction Tube Light uses a magnetic field to transfer electrical current to a regular 6’ft fluorescent bulb. The bulb will continue to emit light if lifted several inches away. This is achieved through the wireless transmission of electricity. The base houses a circuit that safely stores an electric current within a magnetic field. The bases are simple geometric forms milled from solid steel and plated in black chrome. more at http://www.castordesign.ca Filmed by Peter Lusztyk and Derek Blais http://www.peterandrew.ca

Toronto design studio Castor Design has created a custom lighting installation for the TIFF Bell Lightbox, in which copper sulphate crystals were grown on a set of chandeliers. They collaborated with Derek Shapton to direct a short film to accompany the installation. Using a Olympus BX51 microscope, Derek created this time-lapse video; it will be showing for the next year, on display with the chandeliers, in the Bell Blue Room member's lounge. Sound design by D Burke Mahoney and post-production by Spot Cinema, with special thanks to the Advanced Optical Microscopy Facility at the University Health Network. Get a closer look at the crystals and chandeliers here http://www.westsidestudio.com/blog/?p=15317 See more of Derek's work at http://www.derekshapton.com or check out his blog at http://www.derekshapton.com/planet_shapton

CASTOR IS FRENCH FOR BEAVER is a Semifinalist in the $200,000 GE FOCUS FORWARD Filmmaker Competition. View more Semifinalist films at https://vimeo.com/groups/focusforwardfilms/albums/6362. Multidisciplinary design firm, Castor is known for recontextualizing discarded materials. Three of their most iconic designs are lights repurposed from items most people intend for the trash - the Tube Light from used fluorescent tube lamps; the Tank Light from expired fire extinguishers; the Invisible Chandelier from piles of assorted burnt out light bulbs - all of which are the subject of this film, CASTOR IS FRENCH FOR BEAVER. We meet and observe the team of Castor’s small Toronto operation - first fabricator Darryl Mahoney on his journey to pull together the pieces that make up the Tank Light, followed by partner Kei Ng's description of how a seemingly ugly item has beauty in a restored context and finally Brian Richer, founding partner and principal designer, who explains the philosophy behind finding new use in the most un-reusable items on the planet. Castor’s work has been described as a cross between Guy Maddin and Larry Clark with a side of Stompin’ Tom Connors. They are interested in the middle ground between high design and ribald yokelism.
