Back in 2011, Jo and I were on the scene when this particular cat was discovered just outside of Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park in Sam Roi Yod, Thailand. Someone had shot him and left him on the side of the road. The scene was heartbreaking. Ruj, from the Fishing Cat Research and Conservation Project, kept his skeleton and pelt after the necrospy in order to serve as outreach tools for fishing cat conservation. Fishing cats have a more elongated top of the skull than most other cats. It's part of an adaptation for their lives as water loving, fish catching felines. I hope what you see here has its certain element of beauty despite its tragic story, and that what's left of our fallen fishing cat can help the ones that still wander somewhere out there in the marshland. On July 2, 2013, researchers from the Fishing Cat Research and Conservation Project in Thailand captured unprecedented video of a young wild fishing cat fishing. They set up this video trap after several nights of cats raiding fish traps of local farmers. They modified a pond that was already in use by the cats in order to encourage the fishing in front of their cameras. Two different fishing cats visited this pond that night. In the coming days, the team hopes to film even more exciting video of the cats going after their prey of choice, perhaps with more splashing involved. Still, what you are about to see has never been recorded in the wild before.

CAT in WATER is a documentary film expedition to track and document the elusive fishing cat, of which only about 10,000 remain in the world. This cat has been little documented in the wild, despite living close to villages. Biologists recently discovered a new population in Thailand, but these cats are mysteriously vanishing. Our film combines an adventure narrative with in-depth reporting to highlight the untold natural history, threats and unusual conservation potential of this endangered cat. Sign the petition to help Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand before its too late for the animals there. http://www.thepetitionsite.com/2/urgent-plea-for-rescued-thai-wildlife/ http://wfft.org http://catinwater.wordpress.com Earlier this week about 60 armed agents from the Thailand Department of National Parks and Border Patrol Police raided non-profit wildlife rescue facility Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand. According to accounts by Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand, Jansaeng “Noi” Sangnanork, wife of founder Edwin Wiek, was arrested and escorted by 30 armed agents from the facility after failure to produce 450 legal documents in a two-hour period. The Elephant Nature Park was also stormed by 100 agents in a similarly timed raid. Officials have confiscated more than 100 animals so far, including Asian elephants, gibbons, leopard cats, civets and macaques that were being rehabilitated and otherwise sheltered there. Officials raided the center after they received a call that animals were being held in tortuous conditions. This is not the first time Edwin Wiek and his team have been targeted by such accusations. Wiek says this persecution is an intimidation tactic aimed at silencing those who draw attention to the oversights and illegality of people with money and power. On February 11 and 12, just days prior to the raid, Wiek had been quoted in news organizations trying to draw attention to recent elephant and tiger trafficking in connection with several private zoos in Thailand. While reporting for CAT in WATER, Jo and I visited Edwin at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand. We saw firsthand how much this center is helping to save abused wildlife, and spoke with Edwin about the persecution he's faced while trying to give these animals a second chance. Watch this video to see the rescue center for yourself. CAT in WATER is an independent project documenting the natural history and environmental issues of endangered fishing cats, two of which were being sheltered at Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand.

At the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand an ex-Special Forces, former fashion designer, towering Dutchman by the name of Edwin Wiek, devotes his life and courage to Thailand's damaged wildlife, doing what he can to give them a chance at a better life. We visited Edwin to meet and learn the stories of two fishing cats rescued there. In the process, we heard the stories of a menagerie of animals, including Asian elephants. The day after our visit we had the honor and life's dream of seeing elephants in the wild for the first time. This video is our homage to the elephant, and our good fortune of getting to share a moment with them during our brief lifetime here on planet Earth. Please watch our elephant video and send these Asian elephants your love and blessings by sharing it with everyone you know. PS - A visit to Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand is well worth your time, whether you're in Thailand or abroad.
