In the final segment of his three-part video series on the human side of the South Texas drought, mySouTex video director Bill Clough is there when a well-known Berclair rancher — who no longer can afford to feed his cattle — puts 70 percent of his herd up for auction. It is a story being repeated often as ranchers are forced to cull or sell their herds — knowing that if and when the rains return, starting over is going to be costly. So many ranchers selling off their cattle means a shortage of beef later, both at the ranch and on the table. The cattleman sums it all up at the start of Clough’s documentary: “This drought is a wreck!” The third and final segment of the series involved Bee Publishing Company staff in Beeville, Karnes City and Refugio.
