    Surfing Rincon with an FS700 hooked up to the Odyssey 7Q. Brilliant recorder. Really. The more I use it, the more I love the footage coming out of it. Some shots in this video – in particular – really emphasize how well the 7Q fixes the FS700's biggest flaws. Take note of the detail and clarity of the pier way off in the background of the second shot...those kinds of not-quite-horizontal lines are normally a NIGHTMARE for the FS700 in super slow-mo (and sometimes even just at 24p). No moire. I don't know what the Vimeo compression might be doing, but on my monitor, after hours of pixel-peeping...there's just clean, crisp detail. Cannot WAIT to see 4K footage coming out of this recorder. Actually, I can. This 2K really does look like a supersampled 4K image. Really. There's so little noise (if any), and no blockiness in any of the colors. The image resolves so damn well. Also look at the shots of the surfer paddling out, where his head is silhouetted by the clipped sunlight...FS700 users know full well what a deathtrap this can be...dark objects against highlights...for some reason the FS700 just breaks down to the resolution of a Nintendo running Bubble Bobble. With the raw footage, not a pixel out of place. Totally clean. Winning! Also...the colors. My god, the colors. Clean. Solid. Smooth. No noise. Lots of nuance. When you push the image, the noise is just filmic looking. It doesn't degrade the image. The one shot of the surfer when he's up and riding the wave...that one I pushed 2 stops, and saturated the hell out of it...the grain that comes out just looks pleasant. So forgiving. I love it. When you start shooting with your Odyssey, you're going to have a folder for each clip with tens of thousands of these frames in there. Ugh. FCPX really needs to get it together so it can handle these bins. Photoshop garbles these files. Aperture works great, though. Resolve is OK. Still super glitchy.

      First clip cranked out of my brand new Odyssey 7Q! Raw 2K @ 24p out of the FS700, Canon EF 100m macro, Metabones. The colors and clarity of the images out of the Odyssey are stunning. Particularly the color depth. So much more flexibility to grade without introducing noise. Blacks are extremely clean. The extra color depth adds a level of *apparent* resolution and sharpness to the image that really makes it pop. The occasional glitchy frames aren't in the raw footage...this is DaVinci Resolve's problem. Haven't been able to ouput a clean file yet. Looking into alternative workflows. Nonetheless...the 2K raw looks like a genuine supersample of a 4K image. 240fps coming next. Hang tight.
