There has never been a greater opportunity of preventing cervical cancer than there is today. The gold-standard exam, the PAP test, is considered the most successful cancer screener ever. “Yes, it’s had an excellent history and a tremendous reduction in cervical cancer in our lifetime,” says Dr. Edward Halpren, a gynecologist on medical staff of Lee Memorial Health System. The test detects abnormal cells and according to the U.S. Office of Disease Prevention, regular screening and follow up care could prevent most cervical cancer deaths. “The advantage of the PAP test is it actually finds precancerous lesions before they develop into a cancer.” A second step in preventing disease is often a missed opportunity. The HPV vaccine was made available eight years ago - it inoculates children against the virus which is a major cause of cervical cancer. But in this country a third of adolescent girls and two thirds of boys aren’t taking advantage. “All of the vaccines are used to preemptively protect again something and that’s the same with the HPV,” says Dr. Denise Drago. She is a pediatrician with Lee Memorial Health System. “We want to protect them against potentially getting cervical cancer, not reactively treat cervical cancer when they get it.” The HPV vaccine helps boys too - the same virus is linked to several male cancers and is a major driver behind head and neck cancers. Countries where the vaccine is widely used have markedly lower rates. “I think in the future when there’s more publicity about cervical cancer rates going down it’ll get more accepted,” says Dr. Drago. The combination of a solid screening test and a proven vaccine is bringing us closer to eradicating cervical cancer.
