Ekayani & Cheb i Sabbah (Rest In Peace Dear Friend,) Filmed ar Rose Live Music Brooklyn NY October 2010 This humorous clip with DJ Cheb i Sabbah (1947 - 2013 ) was shot in Brooklyn a place that he hadn't stepped foot in for 40 years since his days of working with The Living Theater in the 1960's. This is a behind the scenes clip as it were with Cheb talking about how this string of appearances on October 23,24, and 25th at ROSE Live Music (defunct), Littlefield and finally Deep Space at Cielo. This clip is a preview 2 of a FILM on Yoga & Culture by director John Halpern. You may know John from his work with the Dalai Lama. John has an extensive and storied background. His film on artist Joseph Beuys is central to the Guggenheim Museum's collection on Beuys. As founder of MDS Films his understanding of Bridging Worlds is exceptional and we are lucky to have him working on this project. He needs to be paid to finish editing this film that features DJ Cheb i Sabbah, ourselves with appearances by Gaura Vani As Kindred Spirits, yogini Jessica Sinter and more. Performances, interviews and cultural commentary on the mysticism of the East on popular Western music is interspersed as John tags along during a three day festival in the best nightclubs in New York City with a peek into the underground. It's very cool. I hope one day soon we can finish this project. Sadly Cheb won't be watching it. At least not in this dimension. With a heart full of love and grief - Ekayani

Pre Party for Bali Spirit Festival In Bali April 1st Cheb also performed in Ubud April 3rd http://www.facebook.com/home.php?ref=home#!/event.php?eid=366971527073 CHEB I SABBAH BIO http://www.myspace.com/chebisabbahji Cheb i Sabbah was born in Algeria of Berber (Amazigh) descent and moved to Paris as a teenager and became a DJ by chance. By the late 1980s, residing in San Francisco, he was internationally pushing boundaries on the dance floor, seeking ways to infuse Asian, Arabic and African sounds into the mix. Then as the “world music” movement unfolded, Cheb i Sabbah took the inspired step of recording traditional and classical musicians from India, Pakistan and Africa, effectively transforming those compositions into sonic landscapes, thus creating a new style of electronic music “composed” by a DJ. With seven landmark recordings on the Six Degrees Records label, Sabbah remains a DJ at heart, but he is also something more. “As a DJ you have ears,” says Sabbah, “this is my instrument, you know what you want to hear on the dance floor or in producing music.” An innovator in one of the most contemporary musical realms, he is clearly committed to creating new forms. “But at the same time,” says Sabbah, “the most important focus for me is to keep the musical tradition alive. For example, folk, trance and healing musicians are struggling to make a living and teach the young generations. Once those musicians go, it's over, then what?” As an “Outernational” DJ to defender of ancient traditions, Sabbah is a true musical iconoclast and visionary in the electronica scene. From the crowded confines of nightclubs to major festivals, Cheb i Sabbah enjoys a worldwide reputation as a magician of the dance floor. On stage he often spins accompanied by live musicians, dancers and massive projected visuals, interwoven and juxtaposed as the spirit moves him. http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=30710850419&ref=ts http://www.facebook.com/chebisabbah

Don Cherry, from Straight No Chaser (UK) “Working with Cheb i is so important, because he really is a professor of music, presenting it in such a way so we can realize the importance of trance dance. That’s what he’s in to, and that’s what I’ve always been trying to do in music: to create a mandala that turns, so you can reach a certain state of happiness and contact with the Spirit – a celebration of life.”
