    • Rick Witherell: In My Own Words

from Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh / Added

Rick Witherell of Tionesta, Pennsylvania served in the Army at the end of the Cold War, but when his reserve unit was called up during the Gulf War, he deployed to Kuwait. “We fought a chemical war,” he says. Most people do not understand the toxic fallout from Iraqi scud missiles and the massive oil field fires that rained down on the troops. The effects were inescapable then–and now. Yet for many years after the war the government was incapable or unwilling to recognize the peculiar illness brought home by the troops. “I’ve got Gulf War Syndrome,” Rick says. “I live with neurological pain every day of my life.” This interview is a production of the Veteran Voices of Pittsburgh Oral History Initiative, in partnership with the Veterans Breakfast Club. It was recorded March 20, 2014 at Mt. Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tionesta, Pennsylvania. http://VeteranVoicesofPittsburgh http://VeteransBreakfastClub

Scientists specializing in marine ecosystems, experts in chemical disposal, and ordinary citizens are outraged that this is taking place without the previous consultation of the local population and without previously assessing the potential impact to the environment. What are the consequences of this action for the environment? For us? Why did they choose a "closed sea" like the Mediterranean? Why are they using an untested destruction method, in a potentially hostile sea environment? Why aren't these chemical weapons being destroyed in the countries that produced them? The truth is that we have to shout a resounding NO in order to stop this. In order to change this decision. In order to stop this potential pollution of the environment. Our weapon against this chemical destruction is to use the power of image. The power of the internet. The power of collective effort in order to encourage mass reaction.
