Brendon Sargent is a senior majoring in chemistry. He also is president of SPICE, Students Participating in Chemical Education. This student-run organization puts the Wisconsin Idea into action by showing public grade school students that chemistry can be exciting and sometimes explosive. Trained undergraduates— not all chemistry majors—take experiments into the classroom where they inspire the next generation of scientists and inventors.

The start of early atomic history. We will look over the five principles of Dalton's Billiard Ball Model of the Atom. Crookes' work on the cathode ray tube would help J.J. Thomson create the first novel model of the atom since Democritus. Not a bad day's work. from ChemHeritage Added 59 0 0

The Society of Chemical Industry (SCI), America Section, awarded the 10th annual SCI Gordon E. Moore Medal to Jerzy Klosin, a research fellow at The Dow Chemical Co. SCI honored Klosin at a luncheon in his honor during Innovation Day 2013, which took place Sept. 17 at the Chemical Heritage Foundation in Philadelphia. Klosin’s catalysts deliver significant control of co-monomer incorporation and termination reactions, enabling the creation of wholly new polymer architectures, according to SCI. The resulting “designer polyolefins” can be tailored to help streamline processes and enhance sustainability by significantly improving the energy efficiency of production. Klosin is the third scientist from Dow to receive the Gordon E. Moore Medal since its inception 10 years ago.
