Six large stunning murals will be unveiled at the start of Thyme Festival week this month in Alexandra. The central theme of the murals, which will reside on the side of the Tin Goose Cafe in Alexandra, is ‘Cherishing our Environment’. There are two large mural panels (2.5m x 1.2m) painted by contemporary commercial artist Andrew Price and inspired by the ideas coming from the Youth Forum and Ignite Youth groups. The four smaller panels (1.2m x 1m) have been created in collaboration with Year 7/8 students from the Clyde, The Terrace, St Gerard’s and Alexandra Primary schools. The murals have been six months in the making with artist Andrew Price first having to seek community support for the idea. Local schools, businesses and youth groups were contacted and were asked to be involved, sharing their thoughts regarding their environment. Alexandra Community Arts Council sponsored the project. Both Andrew and the Alexandra Community Arts Council are grateful to Place Makers Alexandra, QT Creative Kids, and Mitre10 in Alexandra and Cromwell for their support of materials. In addition, The Men Shed, and Vincent’s Signs have generously donated wood, paint, signage, skills and time. Without this support the young people of Alexandra and Clyde could not have been involved in this great community project. Andrew has documented the entire creative and artistic process in video and photography. The student’s mind-maps, their initial designs, early concept pieces produced by the artist and the stages of production of all the murals can be seen on www.andrewprice.kiwi.nz. Andrew hopes that the full documentation of the mural production is an enjoyable resource for Central Otago communities and adds further value to the visually striking pieces. The unique mural has been methodically produced with high quality materials and paints which will stand the test of time and allows the people of Alexandra to enjoy it for years to come. The Thyme Festival committees who have supported the concept feel very proud to unveil this mural as an addition to the Alexandra District’s Public Art.
