Unega Nole Gigage is a collaborative project between Frank Brannon and Jeff Marley. The project questions the concept of the book through a non-traditional form. Through the installation conveys the importance of location and place especially as it relates to Appalachia, actions which can be a part of archeological processes and removal of cultural items as an expression of power, and the use of the book in a non-traditional form as a determinator of who the book is for.

A few months ago I had the distinct honor of being invited to a gathering of Native flute players & Elders from across the Continent--my first time ever to Tennessee, North Carolina & the Great Smoky Mountains. While waiting to catch my flight to Knoxville I had learned from one of my Dad's cousins that my Grandma Lavesta was Cherokee and I should pay my respects to the Cooper Clan up at the hilltop cemetery in Cherokee. Grandma grew up during the time when it wasn't cool to be either Hawaiian and, especially, Indian. While at the gathering I was gifted a Cherokee flute made by a master flute-builder, Danny Begay. Danny uses recycled wood and this particular flute, I learned, had been carved from the main beam from a miller's barn. All told it's nearly 300 years-old. Many times those who craft & build take care of everybody else's projects while their own projects take the back seat. So it made sense that the miller's barn when finished would have made use of the scraps from the projects he'd overseen in his simple life. Kind of reminds me of how there could be beauty from my Grandma's life even though she'd been taught all her life to be ashamed of being Cherokee. We don't always get to understand why we end where we do and why we call it "home" but that's where the best music comes from. I intro this version of Natalie Merchant's "Motherland" with that white oak flute. Enjoy.
