A collaboration between Cherry Kino (UK, Film) and Futuristic Waves (Portugal/UK, Music). We met on a plane travelling between Manchester and Lisbon in December 2013 and became friends. The film was shot originally on Super 8 and then re-worked onto 16mm film. Everything was hand-processed. We hope you like it! If you do, please tell us! Love Martha and João xx

Watch a film by Kathy Alberici and Martha Jurksaitis, made for a forthcoming performance at Berlin's 2014 CTM festival. Alberici is featured in an article by Dan Barrow in The Wire 359. Alberici says: "...in film, so much of our experience is shaped by sound, as opposed to dialogue, yet it is rarely the primary focus of our attention.... I think that Foley [sound] is a perfect example of discontinuity: the ear is tricked into associating a sound and a visual that are not concurrent. It’s an aural illusion. And not only that, but it changes our perception of the visual, by pulling out certain elements of a scene, manipulating our attention to enhance the story." Born in the UK, improvising violinist and field recordist Kathy Alberici studied classical music in her teens, but soon became interested in jazz and noise. After a stint in New Zealand playing in the Vitamin-S improvising collective, she got involved with DJ Scotch Egg’s psych doom project Drum Eyes, and is now based in Berlin. The Super 8 film The Garden Of Polymitas is a collaboration between Alberici and film maker Martha Jurksaitis (aka Cherry Kino) under the moniker Polymitas. The film also features guitarist Calvin Xang. Another film by Polymitas, Sonic Portrait Of The Funkhaus Nalepastraße, will be premiered at Berlin's 2014 CTM festival (24 January–2 February), utilising the old East German state radio headquarters, a sprawling modernist building that now houses artists's studios, offices and rehearsal spaces.

This is the first piece by 'Polymitas', the collaborative duo of Martha Jurksaitis (image) and Kathy Alberici (sound). We travelled to France together and spent a week having long conversations about ideas, recording sounds, filming on Super 8, and having adventures. We weren't sure when we decided to spend this week together if anything would result, but it turns out we make a good duo :) The film is entirely hand-processed by me at the Cherry Kino studio. Telecine is by 'ocho y pico' in Madrid. The first draft of editing was done by hand with a splicer, and the final edits were made using Premiere Pro. Since creating this piece, Polymitas have been commissioned by CTM Festival in Berlin to create an audio-visual portrait of the Funkhaus, the former GDR's radio broadcasting station, a vast sprawling complex of buildings in various states of disrepair with some pristine examples of East German luxe. The performance will take place on 1st February 2014, at HAU1 in Berlin. We hope to see you there! x Polymitas (Martha Jurksaitis and Kathy Alberici)

A Super 8 music video for Just Handshakes' song 'London Bound', from their album of the same name, out on Bleeding Gold Records. I used a variety of materials on the film stock, including nail varnish and inks. I hope you enjoy it! x

16mm film, also available as an installation A vision of women playing in the sea at Saltburn in North Yorkshire becomes a celebration of the material nature of film. The silver salts in film that react to light also react to the metallic salts in film toners, and a multi-coloured seascape emerges from the salt of the sea. Filmed on a part of the beach that was once notorious for shipwrecks, Salt is a love letter to film and to the churning, crashing, passionate sea. The opening symbol is the alchemical symbol for salt.

16mm, 2013 A collaborative work by POLYMITAS (Kathy Alberici and Martha Jurksaitis). For other POLYMITAS works please see 'Funkhaus' and 'The Garden of Polymitas', both on this vimeo page. 'Nail Art' is a 16mm film made entirely using nail varnishes and nail stickers as my materials. It's a visceral response to the craze for nail art, and considers whether nail art is wholly at odds with female freedom, as an activity that requires maintaining a veneer at the cost of empowered physical action in the world, or whether it's a modern-day equivalent to patchwork and a piecing together of feminine community and the emergence of a fresh and active aesthetics. Nail varnish and filmmaking do have some parallels - both involve toxic chemicals coming into contact with lungs and hands, both contain organic substances (keratin / gelatine respectively), and both can be somewhat preserved through the use of a sealant (clear top-coat / film guard). The film is made on 16mm Ektachrome, a film stock now discontinued and considered perhaps 'dead'. The film you see is the original, processed by hand, and which will progressively become more and more worn by the projector each time it is played. We won't try to 'patch up' my film (or nails). We will let it gloriously scratch and wear off through being well and truly used. Nothing is pristine. Underneath their attractive coatings, nails are full of bacteria and dirt. Our film is living and dying at the same time, perpetually moving. Nails keep growing after death. Is the same true for analogue film?

Something draws me to you. A berried whisper, soft tongue of pine, the promise of a bed of needles to while away some time in your luscious silva shade, filling myself up with your strong steady scent that strengthens my muscles, stretches my spine. A cool woody balm for such a boiling heart. - This film, made in a Finnish forest in April this year, was hand processed in coffee developer to a black and white negative, fixed using sea salt water for 20 hours, and I then hand-painted it with photographic watercolours. I wanted to use a filmmaking process that was gentle on the magnificent environment I was in, and that's what I came up with. I then inverted the film to create a positive image, where instead of being black, the trees are coloured. This is a new technique I developed, and have since shared with the artist analogue filmmaking community. 'Silva' is Latin for forest, and 'silver' is the essence of cinema, in all its many shades. I recorded the sound in the same forest, just as the snow began to slowly melt and the cranes were flying back for the beginning of Spring.
