Putting in a new car seat doesn’t have to be a DIY job. In fact many do-it-yourselfers are getting it wrong, which is why Lee Memorial Health System is lending a hand. “My advice to parents, don’t do the guesswork you might make mistakes. Come to us we’ll take you step by step, you’ll be a professional by the time you come to us,” says Lina Quintana, child advocate for Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida. Robert Dowd asked for help. He didn’t know where to begin, putting in a seat for his great granddaughter to use on vacation. “With a little instruction it’s much clearer,” says Dowd. The biggest mistake first-timers make is not reading the car seat manual. If you plan to go it alone, use it to find out how the particular seat is meant to go in. Next, determine the type of installation of system your car supports. There are two variations. “There are vehicles that are older then ‘02 and the vehicles that are newer than ‘02. That’s where the cut-off for different installation comes into play. You either install it with a seat belt or you install it with a latch system. The latch system is two bars that are built into your vehicle,” says Quintana. Where you put the seat is up to you, as long as it’s in the back. The middle is a popular position, but you should consider several factors. “It is depends on parent’s height, size of that car seat, size of that vehicle. So parents are over sold in the middle installation it doesn’t really work in many vehicles,” says Quintana. Wherever you choose, the seat should be secured snuggly. And give no more than an inch from side-to-side. When in doubt ask, the health system offers car safety sessions on a regular basis, or you can call and make an appointment. “We’ll show you how to do it, it’s free of charge. Grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles anybody so come take advantage of the program,” says Quintana. A lot is riding on your actions. As childhood maladies go, its symptoms standout. Alarming parents and making kids feel darn pretty rotten. “Your child is having a hard time swallowing, you see they’re in pain when they swallow - that could make you pretty nervous. But when you look at the hand and soles and see a rash there then you would be really worried at that point,” says Dr. Pierre Loredo, pediatrician with Lee Memorial Health System. Most common in children under four - hand, foot and mouth disease follows a predictable pattern. “What happens is you’ll have a kid with a sore throat, they’ll feel a little tired, they will just lay around the house, and then about 12 hours later we’ll have a fever develop and then after the fever, we start to get a little rash on our mouth, primarily our gum line. We can have it on our lips and on our tongue,” says Dr. Loredo. Hand, foot and mouth disease is an intestinal virus that causes red spots and water blisters on the palms of hands, soles of feet and mouth. Like most germs it spreads by unwashed hands making group settings a potential breeding ground. Since it’s a virus, it can’t be treated with antibiotics. Parents should provide supportive care with over-the-counter drugs and keep their kids home during the contagious period. “The first two or three days they will be having a fever. But after those two to three days go by kids tend to do better,” says Dr. Loredo. The illness takes a few weeks to completely resolve. If it’s spreading through your child’s school or daycare, the best way to handle it, is to keep surfaces clean and wash hands frequently. The movie had to include videos as well as photographs of the sports event. The fest involved underprivileged children participating in various activities along with the other school students. We were given 1 hour to shoot and another hour to edit and compile the video. The winning video was to be shown in the auditorium. So, despite of starting 20 minutes late, we came first and our video was shown in the auditorium! :) The clips I shot were all taken in a hurry so some of them are shaky and blurred.
