In the city of Varanasi there are many suburban areas that remain in ignorance and marginalization from the rest of Indian society. The families of the slums are living in extreme poverty, deficient health and dedicated to very low-paid jobs traditionally regarded as "unclean" by the upper castes. The 'untouchables' (the name assigned by the Hindu society) are repudiated, insulted and excluded. Illiteracy makes impossible the progress of the children, being forced to work for the sustenance of the family from an early age. Terra Incognita is a short documentary about the life of a suburban family. A life subjected to social discrimination and the struggle for survival. Jahima and their children are engaged in collecting garbage, while the householder, Purbha, works as a rickshaw. After living with them and enter their circle of trust from working with the NGO Seed for Change, born this audiovisual piece. "When I look at this photo I feel emotional, which surprises me," says Yvonne. "It's a long time ago, and I see a mother who had no brothers or sisters of her own." Yvonne describes the photo, taken 30 years ago, as part of an annual holiday ritual, involving more than 90 family members. The photo was taken at Glen Davis alongside the Capertee River on a private property near the Wollemi National Park. "Family is very important to me," Yvonne continues. "These children now bring their own children, so we've got three generations coming here now. "None of us prompts or brings any pressure on anybody to come, but they're coming and bringing their own children." "We each want to come together at this place and we'll move mountains to get there." Thanks to Maitland Regional Art Gallery for providing the venue for this ABC Open workshop.+ More details
