What are you complaining about? Cell phones and bosses? Bad drivers and crummy weather? In summer and fall 2011, the Ulrich Museum asked Wichitans to vent, whine, and get things off their chests. An array of those gripes, crafted from several hundred submissions, was set to a clever musical score by Tom Wine, Wichita State University’s director of choirs, and performed by the WSU Madrigal Singers. These vocalists presented a humorous medley of moaning throughout the spring semester, with performances that included a WSU baseball game, the annual Wichita Gridiron comedy show, and outside on the lawn of WSU’s Rhatigan Student Center. Wichita Complaints Choir was inspired by Finnish artists Tellervo Kalleinen and Oliver Kochta-Kalleinen, who have organized cathartic choirs of complainers around the world.

For you, only you is a collaborative project initiated by the artist Sonia Boyce with Mikhail Karikis and celebrated early-music choir Alamire. For you, only you exists as a live performance with Mikhail Karikis and Alamire Consort; a three-screen video-installation by S.Boyce directed by David Bickerstaff; and a documentary by David Bickerstaff. The work focuses on the notion and politics of difference (in tradition, voicing, communication and address) while challenging the boundaries between sound art and classical music. For you, only you comprises the fusion of Mikhail Karikis’s sound-art and a Renaissance musical masterpiece by Josquin Desprez. By juxtaposing the role and use of voice in Josquin’s music with the deconstructed vocalisations by Karikis, For you, only you imagines a conversation across centuries between a contemporary troubled voice and the world of harmony. It creates a spectacle at once reflective and celebratory of diversity.
