Mapping the spread of disease is essential to preventing epidemics. The fascinating mathematics of infection is explained here: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/modelling-the-spread-of-infectious-diseases Mathematics has proved to be of considerable benefit in modelling the population biology of infectious diseases by examining the rate of change of the proportion of the population susceptible to, infected with and recovered from a particular infectious disease. In particular, if a vaccine is available, mathematics helps in understanding the impact of different vaccination strategies. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/modelling-the-spread-of-infectious-diseases Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. This tradition continues today with all of our five or so public lectures a week being made available for free download from our website. There are currently over 1,500 lectures free to access or download from the website. In Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s biggest city, most people depend on pit latrines. They leak and flood, are only infrequently emptied, and for users and sewage collectors alike they're a source of potentially fatal diseases like cholera and typhoid. Water Aid is pioneering a cheap and simple pump and motorbike device that empties up to six latrines a day. And it's a cleaner and cheaper option than traditional methods. In Dar es Salaam, only 10% of the city is connected to mains sewage. http://www.wateraid.org/uk

One of my first documentaries was looking at the 2010 floods in Pakistan. The floods, which covered land the size of Britain at any one time over the 6 months it took to move down the country, took out buildings, hospitals, road systems, houses and livelihoods. The UN described it as the worst disaster humanity has faced for over 100 years, with over 20 million people affected. This documentary looks at the short and long term effects of the disaster as well as the efforts of a charity to help the many people in need.

During a mission trip to Haiti with But God...Ministries, I met Macil. Macil and his family survived the 2010 earthquake that devastated Haiti. They also endured hardships and sickness in the tent cities that followed. His family eventually were invited to take part in a new type of community away from the harsh life they were in. Volunteer teams from But God...Ministries built a house for Macil and continue to build houses, health clinics, and communities in Haiti outside of Port Au Prince. Recorded during our mission trip May 10-16, 2014 with team members from and friends of Brasfield & Gorrie, and Auburn University.
