So You Want to Be a Dancer is the ultimate book for anyone who has to fight the urge to sashay down grocery store aisles or school hallways. Shaffer discusses everything from how to break into the industry to practical advice—from how to audition and book a job to dealing with movie stars on-set. So You Want To Be A Dancer is a must-read for any creative entrepreneur, aspiring artist pursuing a career in today’s social media-savvy society, or anyone who savors the heartfelt journey of an artist. Reviews: Matthew Shaffer has written the kind of book I wish I would have had available to me as a young dancer. This is a great guide for young dancers and parents alike to understand the many different aspects of this crazy world we call 'show business'. If you are a dancer wanting to know more, I recommend you read this book! (Mandy Moore, two-time Emmy Award–nominated choreographer, So You Think You Can Dance) If you’re planning a career in the industry as a dancer, do yourself a favor and read Matthew's book. His stories shed light into a world that is often difficult to navigate. It is full of insight and will inform you in invaluable ways. (Kenny Ortega, three-time Emmy Award–winning director and choreographer whose work includes High School Musical and Dirty Dancing) Matthew has created great insight into the world of dance. Such important information for any dancer! (Tyce Diorio, Emmy Award–winning choreographer and artistic director) About the Author: Matthew Shaffer wrote, directed, and starred in his first production when he was seven years old and has been entertaining audiences (and family members) ever since! When Matthew isn’t busy performing on stage and screen, he's traveling the globe as a master teacher and dance judge, and collaborating and creating work with Jeff Payton and their production company, A Group Production, in Los Angeles, California. UnderControl performative / interactive installation _ first prototype filmed at Schmiede 2014 UnderControl is a project about our lives under control, in every movement, breath, mood, way, intimacy and, of course, privacy. This hidden sharp violence of our personal paths throughout the traceability of each action we do through a digital world and the extremely huge amount of infos, we freely give about our-selves in our everyday life. With this starting point the idea is to recreate a small scale space inspired by the Panoptic of Foucault where the human eyes of control will become - in an opposite prospective- different shooting eyes of the cameras and the live-recording will display a stream on the screens for an active audience. The body will still dance in this small space with this specific condition, trying to define how we feel under control. The challenge is to research and find the poetic depth in these particular conditions coming from inspiration of our age of digital control, where the“eyes”are potentially everywhere, being not really aware of what are exactly all the consequences of this present and probably more intensive future conditions. The audience is free to look at the body, the screen and/or at different screens at any time and at the same time. concept & dance Livia Marques. As people in a city are moving within their own well-known living spaces, which are widely varied, a citymap and a musical score arises, based upon the dynamics of these differents ways of life.

A multi-media collaboration by PO1: dance/choreography Michelle Lai, dance/choreography Heyward Bracey and video artist Kio Griffith. This piece examines the relationship between self and other, idea and truth, ideals and instincts. Democracy as an idea or ideal suggests a framework for transformation. There is the question of choice, how we choose to remember our struggles, & subconsciously embody histories. -- 16 Faces was developed as a part of the 2014 “T Memorial” event (a commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing China) at ARC in Pasadena, California. This piece led a multi-cultural cast of collaborators through a process of self and cultural reflection upon the iconic 1989 catastrophe between student democracy protestors and the Chinese government. The process involved interviewing U.S. residents immigrated from Hong Kong, collaborative discussions with the Hong Kong Forum (a democracy/human rights advocacy organization) as well as more immediate explorations of what it means to be to be an American of color, confronting discrepancies in the application of justice and democracy here within our own daily lives.
