I was attracted to the The Sweeper of Dreams because of its poetic, fairy tale nature – the manner with which one word was able to conjure up a stunning image in my head. I saw the colour green – lots of it. I imagined the woodland as the ‘orchestra and vocalists’ and hoped to show it as a living, breathing entity. I used the choral /religious feel to the soundtrack to illustrate this in conjunction with my method for filming leaves and bark, illuminating their veins and nodules – revealing their life force. It was vital to place the camera at the boy’s eye level to show the ‘dreamer’ as a child and not an adult, and I decided to capture the boy’s character in mainly wide shots, as this was how I believed another child would view him.
