A little late due to illness, Chris was my February muse for my "The Artist Within" series. Chris is a dancer and took to the art after being introduced to it by a couple of friends. In fact, you can say he was fully immersed in it right from the get go. Following some of his friends to an "open" class, the instructor felt that the general class was at a fairly advanced level. Being his first time, this took Chris by surprise. But much like his gung-ho attitude, he took it in stride, welcoming the challenge and working hard. But since that day he was hooked. He worked tirelessly to improve his craft and studied under some amazing people in his field. While having success in the field of dance, he also branched out to share what he know through teaching. Giving back to the art that gave him a chance at a career he loved is really all of karma coming full circle. While listening to his story, his inspiration I personally struggled to formalize a vision. I had a feeling I wanted but trying to tie in the visuals wasn't easy. I had to really think on how to film dance and make it interesting and still retain artistic elements... not to mention I was tight on time... One of the things I struggled with was weather, remember that this project is a lone project shot on one day, the same day I meet this individual and learn their story. It's to push me to create, manage time and stretch my imagination. Not every idea pans out, or is usable but what it teaches me is how to make critical decisions in a high pressured environment. I wanted to use natural transitions to help spark interest and keep a viewer drawn in as best I could. I felt that if I could do that, it would help with my commercial work later as well as wedding work. All in all, I will say that filming dance creatively was one of the most difficult things I have done with a single camera. Having to visualize the moves and getting Chris to mimic moves that he didn't get a chance to choreograph made it a challenge. Although I am happy that it turned out, I did take a lot of lessons with me that I will inevitably share with my crew. Please let me know what you think, as it will be really helpful for me to keep in mind as I keep working through my artist series. -J

                      Tags
