    • Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel Resigns

(Aired 11/24/2014 on NY1 and Time Warner Cable News stations) Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel is stepping down. President Barack Obama made the announcement at the White House early Monday. NY1’s Geoff Bennett reports that Hagel is resigning under pressure. At the White House Monday, President Barack Obama called Chuck Hagel an "exemplary defense secretary," in announcing Hagel’s resignation. "When it's mattered most behind closed doors, in the Oval Office, you've always given it to me straight. And for that, I will always be grateful," said Obama. "It’s been the greatest privilege of my life, the greatest priveledge to lead and to serve with the men and women of the Defense Department and support their families," said Hagel. The president suggested that it was Hagel's decision to resign after less than two years in office. "If there's one thing I know about Chuck, it's that he does not make this or any other decision lightly," said Obama. But according to two sources, the decision was anything but mutual. They say Obama forced Hagel out. When the former Republican Senator took the job in February, his main focus was to help the military downsize and navigate through a period of tighter budgets. One source says the new threat posed by the Islamic State and Syria put a strain on Hagel’s dealings with the rest of the president's national security team. And the president wanted to change course. Hagel is expected to stay on the job until a successor is nominated and confirmed by the Senate. But the White House says President Obama plans to take his time in announcing just who that person will be.

Date: May 4, 2013 By: Daniel Whyte III Description: 1. According to the Associated Press, Israeli officials confirmed on Saturday that the country's air force carried out a strike against Syria which targeted a shipment of advanced missiles bound for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. The officials said the attack took place early Friday and targeted sophisticated "game-changing" weapons. One official said the target was a shipment of advanced, long-range ground-to-ground missiles. It was not immediately clear where the airstrike took place, or whether the air force carried out the strike from Lebanese or Syrian airspace. The Israeli officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were discussing a secret military operation. 2. According to Reuters, a new Pentagon report to Congress said that North Korea's continuing development of nuclear technology and long-range ballistic missiles will move it closer to its stated goal of being able to hit the United States with an atomic weapon. The report, the first version of an annual Pentagon assessment required by law, said North Korea's Tae-po-dong-2 missile, with continued development, might ultimately be able to reach parts of the United States carrying a nuclear payload if configured as an intercontinental ballistic missile. 3. According to Haaretz, U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel reportedly told his Israeli counterparts that the Obama administration would examine military options against Iran more closely following the Islamic Republic's upcoming elections, and their possible ramifications on the country's nuclear program. According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Hagel, together with other senior American officials, reached an understanding with Israel during the defense secretary's recent visit to Israel. Apparently, the two countries would conduct a joint situation assessment following the elections, and that if diplomatic channels are ruled out, efforts will be shifted to a more detailed discussion of military options. The report also stated that the United States has redesigned its "bunker buster" bomb, that should be able to penetrate the underground nuclear enrichment facilities at Iran's Fordow plant. 4. According to Reuters, Saudi Arabia said five more people have died of a deadly new virus from the same family as SARS, and two other people were in intensive care. The Saudi Health Ministry said the seven cases were discovered in the Eastern Province. The novel coronavirus is from the same family of viruses as those that cause common colds and the one that caused the deadly outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome that first emerged in Asia in 2003. 5. According to the Jewish Daily Forward, a report by the Church of Scotland, published this week, denies any special privilege for the Jewish people in the land of Israel. The church, which in recent years has jettisoned its once philo-semitic character, opened a wide rift with the Scottish Jewish community with the report. Among other controversial statements, the report argues that, "Christians should not be supporting any claims by Jews, or any other people, to an exclusive or even privileged divine right to possess particular territory." The report acknowledges that the Church of Scotland was once a believer in the right of the Jews to the ancient land of Israel and a Scottish minister, Alexander Keith, may even have coined the famous phrase: "A land without a people, for a people without a land." However, the latest report makes clear such affection is a thing of the past. The Bible says in Acts 1:11 that after the disciples watched Jesus ascend into Heaven, two angels appeared to them and said, "Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven? this same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven."
