    • City Pulse - a biometric interface

"City Pulse - a biometric Interface" (2014) Location: t.a.t. new talents / Passagen (Interior Design Week Köln 2014) Time: 13.01.2014 - 19.01.2014 .......................................................................................................................................................................................... City Pulse transforms the hidden rhythm of the pulse into a compsition of light and sound. In the schematic transportation axes of the city of Cologne, the biometric data is stored, analyzed, and made tangible. The user is part of an experimental interfaces at the edge between action/reaction, inside/outside and part of the overall pulse of the city. .......................................................................................................................................................................................... Concept: Citizens, politicians, economists, sociologists, planners, designers - everybody sees, defines and experiences the city in a different way. But regardless of whether we classify cities according to their size, their geographical location or other parameters - All cities have one thing in common: it‘s the people that by their social actions transform the topographic space into a city. They are perhaps the most significant set of data in the city, and part of a dynamic structure between each other and the city itself. The humans sensory organs, espacially in cities, are constantly receiving a high number of stimuli. Whether consciously or unconsciously, we suck in all the impressions which often leads to an over-stimulation on which our body reacts with stress, hassle and exhaustion. But are we only receptors in the city? Probably not. We want to reverse the ongoing data stream. From the inside out, we let our bodies speak. Trying to listen more accurate, our senses sharpen again and we gain an awareness of inner processes and our role as actor in the city as socio-cultural space. Through a biometric interface, the pulse rates of the residents are sonificated, visualized and made tangible by vibrations. The different pulse frequencies of the users will be saved and combined into an overall composition that is sent through the Temporary Art Tower into the city. Installation: For the visualization of the pulse beat we chose programmable LED stripes which are controlled and operated by the software Max/MSP and three arduino boards. Those light sources were particularly well suitable for the implementation of our structure due to their flexibility. A sensor measures the pulse rate of the user in real-time and is further processed by the software. This constantly changing value is assigned to a LED stripe and defines the performing intensity and variation of the sound and light setup. The installation stores the indivdual biometric code of the last three users, emphasizing always the one currently in use. The installation is mounted on the ceiling to reach maximum visibility in the nearer surrounding of the Temporary Art Tower. Thereby we could achieve the aim to transform the T.A.T. into a lighthouse and expand our installation from the exhibition space into the city. The sound setup, consisting of an active genelec subwoofer and two speakers is hidden in a custom-made wooden box which made it possible to concentrated the volume locally and. At the same time we integrated the wooden box as a pedestal in the conceptual framework, on which the user steps up and as link becomes transmitter and receiver at the same time. .......................................................................................................................................................................
