A recent Thursday at 1:08 p.m. His hand was outstretched as he asked for forgiveness from the heavens as a line of people gathered for their weekly ration of day-old bread in Mendell Plaza between Palou and Oakdale off Third Street. "I've been in their shoes and I know what they're up against," said Rev. Charles Grays, 54, who grew up in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood. Grays dropped out of school in 11th grade and soon was swallowed up by unforgiving streets and drug addiction. "Drugs were my way of escaping the reality of life," he said. For decades he struggled to climb out of that world, and in 2001 he made progress by starting a street ministry in conjunction with the Double Rock Baptist Church called the United Fathers Coalition. "It helped me cope with a lot of things that were bothering me in my life," he said. Now on Thursdays he loads up his hubcap-less car and fills the backseat with bread donated from the Entenmann's-Oroweat Bakery Outlet in the Mission. On this day, he rolled into the plaza that he used to frequent during his own troubled journey. He was met by a crew of men eager to unload the bread and neatly placed it on a folding table pulled from the trunk of Grays' car. They formed a line, started a prayer and then Grays changed from his preacher role to that of a bouncer. He made sure each person took only what they needed. "I don't go down there thinking I'm going to change the world or change the people from what they're doing or how they're doing, but I think the bread is an opportunity to open some doors," he said. "I work hard and I do what I do with the bread and the ministry, but it's still not enough."
