The 12th General Election did not only result in the change of government in four states or the lost of Barisan Nasional two-thirds majority in Parliament. It brought along many practices never seen before in the governmant system. In Selangor, a body under the state assembly was formed to monitor the use of public funds. In the federal Parliament the increasing presence of opposition representatives has resulted in more serious debates. Today, UMNO and Barisan Nasional has started speaking the language of change. However, the real reform process is not as easy as voting on polling day. This documentary discusses the meaning behind those promised changes. Info on KOMAS - http://komas.org A Big Pictures production for Pusat KOMAS. 36 mins. While filming a routine stop and search of her boyfriend on the London Underground, Gemma suddenly found herself detained, handcuffed and threatened with arrest. Act of Terror tells the story of her fight to bring the police to justice and prevent this happening to anyone else, ever again. It is easy to forget about the 2000 Terrorism Act and its damaging effect on civil liberties and human rights.  Act Of Terror puts the spotlight back on this murky law, and demands that we keep vigilant in the face of ever increasing state power. An animated journey through the labyrinthine world of English Justice, the sinister caveats of Terrorism legislation, and the shocking cronyism of the police complaints system, Act Of Terror is about strength in the face of powerlessness and finding the courage to fight back. After 9/11, the government began encouraging local police, private security and everyday Americans to report so-called "suspicious activity" that may indicate a security threat. Taking photos of landmarks, walking "nervously" and writing in a notebook are all activities that have led to people being stopped and questioned. Could you be next? I would still be opposed to the death penalty if we executed prisoners by tickling them to death. Now, thanks to Oklahoma's governor rushing an execution, more people now know that "lethal injection" is not as neat and civilized as it sounds, regardless of what you think about the death penalty. After the recent botched execution of Clayton Lockett, we're learning more about what goes into a condemned person's veins and how it gets there. (You can read more on my website.)

Corporations already won the right of free speech and thanks to the Supreme Court, now dump unlimited cash into U.S. elections. Now they've won freedom of religion and the right to selectively follow our laws. Sure, Alito says this "only" applies to matters of contraception and women's health, but I wouldn't be too sure. (Personally, I tend to trust the expertise of four Supreme Court justices over loads of pundits saying this is a narrow decision.) You can read more at my website.

I can't say that I had very high hopes for Obama's NSA reforms. (Hello, Gitmo?) The man can still give a good speech, though, and make me feel like everything is going to be alright. Unfortunately, what really matters is the policy and what actually happens. After his recent announcement about reforming surveillance procedures, bulk collection of everyone's communication data will still occur. (It doesn't matter if you're two steps or thirty-five steps removed from a terrorist, everyone's data will be vacuumed up regardless.) You can read more on my website . . .

Not to worry, NSA spying is done with "judicial oversight" carried out by the FISA court. Never mind it's a secret court that approves surveillance automatically. Let's take a look inside the FISA court. A Mark Fiore political animation.

With the major tech companies taking on government spying, maybe it's time these companies look in the mirror as well. Sure, the government may be snooping into your World of Warcraft chats, but don't forget your privacy has been drastically eroded by some of the very internet companies calling for more privacy. (Binary Sensitivity Alert: Just because I am criticizing internet companies for their role in spying, does not mean I am condoning government spying. As you were.) Read more at my website.
