1. Lawn Birds

Sometime in 2010 I set out to document Claes Oldenburg's "Shuttlecocks" at the Nelson-Atkins museum. After reviewing and editing the footage, I found the impromptu or "reject" shots more interesting. For the record, I did not touch the exterior sculpture.

The color is a little off, but this was my extension of the interview assignment based off of Claes Oldenburg's essay "I Am For An Art." "I am for an art that is political-erotical-mystical, that does something other than sit on its ass in a museum. I am for an art that grows up not knowing it is art at all, an art given the chance of having a starting point of zero. I am for an art that embroils itself with the everyday crap & still comes out on top." -Claes Oldenburg

S.M.S. Predstavitev šestih izdaj revije S. M. S. iz zbirke MGLC MGLC, Študijski kabinet, 31. 8. 2012–julij 2013 S.M.S. je šest heterogenih izdaj časopisa-revije, mapa multiplov, zbirka umetniških del različnih žanrov in medijev, kolektivno umetniško delo in izkušnja umetnikov, med katerimi zasledimo nekatera najpomembnejša imena 20. stoletja. Leta 1968 jih je izdala založba The Letter Edged in Black Press I.n.c. S.M.S. – kratica za Shit Must Stop – ponazarja tudi utrip 60. let prejšnjega stoletja, željo umetnikov po osvoboditvi izpod diktata galerij, kustosov, kritikov in posameznih umetniških zvrsti. S.M.S. vključuje dela umetnikov: Christo, Marchel Duchamp, Walter de Maria, James Lee Byars, Meret Oppenheim, Ray Johnson, Man Ray, Joseph Kosuth, On Kawara, Lawrence Weiner, Roy Lichenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Yoko Ono, Dieter Roth, Richard Artschwager idr. __________________________________________________________________________________ S.M.S. Presentation of six S.M.S. portfolios from the MGLC collection MGLC Study Room, September 2012–July 2013 S.M.S. – an abbreviation for Shit Must Stop – comprises six volumes of a heterogeneous journal/magazine type of publication, a portfolio of multiples, a collection of artworks of various genres and mediums, a collective work and experience of artists, among whom we find some of the most important names of the 20th century. They were published by The Letter Edged in Black Press I.n.c. in 1968. The project’s initiator was American surrealist William N. Copley (1919–1996). Inspired by the Fluxus movement, he saw S.M.S. as an opportunity to go beyond traditional art forms and bring art closer to everyday life. The project provided the artists, who gathered in an apartment on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York, a place to work and publish a series of multiples, which they sold directly to collectors. The S.M.S. magazine was published every two months for a year. The volumes, following the art directions of pop art and dada, included different art mediums from photographs, drawings, texts to audio recordings. From the total of seventy-three artworks, most are visual and textual, and some include sound in the form of vinyl records and magnetic tape. The S.M.S. portfolios include works by numerous artists: Christo, Marchel Duchamp, Walter de Maria, James Lee Byars, Meret Oppenheim, Ray Johnson, Man Ray, Joseph Kosuth, On Kawara, Lawrence Weiner, Roy Lichenstein, Claes Oldenburg, Yoko Ono, Dieter Roth, Richard Artschwager, etc.

Oldenburg’s Spoonbridge and Cherry, a massive sculpture in the shape of a large spoon with a cherry positioned at the end of the spoon, is the most photographed landmark in the Twin Cities. It draws tourists from around the world who want to experience what might be the Walker’s most beloved piece of art. As the spoonbridge and cherry gondolier, I offered canoe rides around the diminutive yet picturesque pond the sculpture sits in. I took on the duty of a gondolier, with the appropriate uniform, and transported the sight-seers on a scenic journey around on the pond that surrounds the famous spoon and cherry. The experience was made even more authentic by small speakers, placed inside the canoe, that played Italian music. http://rachelknoll.com/

Part II of the big "Claes Oldenburg The 60s" show takes you inside the Mouse Museum. Oldenburg put together an odd collection of kitsch, found objects, souvenirs, trivial everyday pieces and toys plus material and prototyps for his art works. The Mouse Museum was first shown in 1972 at the documenta 5 in Kassel and then acquired by the Ludwig Collection and donated to the mumok. Later a seperate "Ray Gun" wing was added, also belonging to the mumok.
