Issa Hapssi waited 9 long years for a life-changing cleft surgery that can take as little as 45 minutes. She was located by the head of Smile Train's programs in Africa, Dr. Githinji Gitahi and along with 20 others suffering with unrepaired clefts traveled 700km to one of our Smile Train partners in Yaounde, Cameroon. Our deepest thanks to our amazing partners in Cameroon, our supporters, and a generous donor who paid for all of the travel expenses.

On behalf of the 125,000+ patients who received free cleft surgery from Smile Train in 2012, and everyone here at Smile Train, THANK YOU!! Without your help, these children would be doomed to lives of shame and isolation, but with your help we have provided over 840,000 free cleft surgeries since 1999. Last year we provided the most surgeries we ever have. With your continued support, we can change even more lives in 2013 and reach the more than one million children still suffering with unrepaired clefts.

Many children who have their cleft palates repaired require speech therapy - this is especially true for patients who receive surgery at an older age. Providing comprehensive speech therapy to our patients who need it, is one of Smile Train's goals. One of our pilot programs that is showing promising results is the Cleft Choir program at a few of our hospitals. One of our choirs just held their Holiday Concert and sent us this video! This choir is composed of children, teenagers and parents all affected by cleft lip and palate who receive care from Smile Train partner Hospital Universitario Julio Muller. Songs and choir practices were coordinated by musicians and speech therapists, resulting in a therapeutic approach to a fun, social and happy activity for the singers. The hospital team is working hard to see that each child is able to improve their speech as a result of this new activity, but the the choir practices and performance are significantly improving the self esteem and confidence for each patient, too. The choirs help our patients make friends with one another, and speak (sing!) in front of others all while improving their speech. The coordinator at a partner hospital said “the result is so rewarding that we would love the activity to be held next year and that the presentations multiply!” Special thanks to Dr. Adalberto Novaes, director of the cleft team and lead surgeon at Hospital Universitario Julio Muller, Adriana Lima Valente, speech therapist overseeing the choir, and everyone who helped and participated in this great event!

Smile Train partner surgeon Dr. Ataklitie Berhea from Ethiopia was selected to receive a scholarship for advanced training in multidisciplinary cleft care. “The main problem for these patients not to have the [cleft] surgery could be of different reason, but the main reason is economy. They don’t have money. They may have awareness. They may know it can be fixed, but they don’t have the money. So Smile Train has been supporting for all the surgeries and patients are not paying anything. Everything is covered for them – transportation, meal, hospital stay, surgery, drugs. Everything is covered for patients. “This child was going to have a cleft lip and palate deformity, and she wanted to kill him. But she came to our hospital for surgery. She got information from a [local radio station]. And she heard about it and we fixed the lip and within six months or so we fixed the palate. And she said 'This time, I’m going to take the child to my parents.' “Four and a half years for nearly 5,000 patients. This is not the case some years back. Some years back, when Smile Train was not in the picture it was 150 surgeries a year.”
