Children born with clefts in developing countries face a life of ridicule, isolation, and shame. Often, they're not allowed to go to school, ever get a job or get married, and in some cases they are abandoned and left for dead. All because their families are too poor to afford a simple, life-changing surgery that costs as little as $250 and can take as little as 45 minutes. Smile Train provides free cleft surgery and follow up care to children born with clefts throughout the world. With over 1,100 local partner hospitals and focus on training, utilizing and empowering local doctors, Smile Train expects to provide more than 128,000 free surgeries this year alone.

A poor farmer and part-time English teacher in Sulawesi, Indonesia, Natsir could never have known that his simple act of kindness for a traveling American student would result in getting his sons Achmad and Winner the cleft surgery that he could never afford. Our Smile Train team could never have guessed how hard Natsir now works to locate other children born with clefts so they too can receive life-changing cleft surgery. Volunteering what little time he can spare, Natsir has already referred over 60 patients to Smile Train.

This is the story of our journey through our children's 9 surgeries. Sebastian, who is 3, was born with a bilateral cleft lip and palate (Van Der Woude Syndrome). Dominic, who is 2, was born with Beckwith-Wiedemann Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects 1 in 15,000 births. He has been dependent on a tracheostomy to breathe since he was 3 months old. By sharing our lives, we hope to develop awareness and understanding.
