      • Welcome to Union Glacier

        from Studiocanoe Added 151K 2,815 135

Union Glacier is located in the southern Ellsworth Mountains of West Antarctica. This is a documentary about a small team of people who live and work on the glacier during the Antarctic summer. In 2013 I was the filmmaker attached to the Scott Expedition - the journey that completed Captain Scott's final, ill-fated expedition from the coast of Antarctica to the South Pole and back again. Our team passed through Union Glacier Camp on route to the starting point of Scott's Hut at Cape Evans, but after becoming stranded at the camp and working with the staff there; I decided to make this documentary. You can see a short trailer for the film here - https://vimeo.com/103828993 For me, this film seems a bit like an antithesis to many expedition and adventure documentaries. There is no great achievement or record broken, nor any real challenge to overcome. Instead it concerns minor details; the everyday tasks of the staff that were made more special by the environment surrounding them. And in fact, I think that's what attracted me to make this film - the delightful trivialities of an average life, working in Antarctica. If you're interested, you can see all the short films I made for the Scott Expedition here - http://studiocanoe.com/expeditions/

Svalbard is an archipelago high within the Arctic Circle. The largest of its islands is called Spitsbergen, meaning “pointed mountains.” In 1920 a treaty known as the Svalbard Act was signed by several nations recognising Norwegian sovereignty over the islands, and declaring the whole region a demilitarized zone. This is a short film about how Svalbard, over the course of recent history, became increasingly linked to developments in climate science, and climate change. It is brief for a subject so large, and lacks the detail of key facts and figures that would provide a much better understanding of the current consensus on climate. Then again, you may perhaps feel it has too many numbers already. It is my hope that regardless of what you make of the content, you will find it beautiful to watch.

                    from Steffen K Added 134K 929 27

The Gaia Project to raise awareness for climate change, started in 2007 as an open source community project to create digital art for this cause. In the last four years a group of 5.000 designers - members from laFraise, Behance, deviantArt and other big design websites - joined them to create designs, music and articles around this major theme.  Gaia curator Marius Bauer approached Steffen Knoesgaard with a suggestion to collaborate on making the first official trailer for the Gaia project and thus adding moving images to the Gaia project for the first time. Teaming up with fellow motion designers Fredrik Ekholm and Simon Holmedal, the team created the trailer working in an online collaboration from 4 different countries based out of New York, Amsterdam, London and Munich. Musician Kevin Durante, an contributor to earlier Gaia releases, joined in to make a custom sound track - that will be released later as a full length track on the forthcoming Gaia album. This is a film based on the book "Death of the Liberal Class" by journalist and Pulitzer prize winner, Chris Hedges. It charts the rise of the Corporate State, and examines the future of obedience in a world of unfettered capitalism, globalisation, staggering inequality and environmental change. The film predominantly focuses on US corporate capitalism, but it is my hope that the viewer can recognise the relevance of what is being expressed with regards to domestic political and corporate activity. It was made entirely of clips found on the web. Music by Clark (warp.net/records/clark) Warning - this film contains scenes that some viewers may find disturbing.
