1. New Website on the Crucial Importance of Indoor Air Quality Launches | Green Builder Media

Green Builder Media just launched a new website aimed squarely at improving the indoor air quality of houses and buildings. "If energy saving is one half of the green building equation, occupant health, including IAQ, is the other," says Editor-in-Chief Matt Power, "One way to quickly separate the IAQ aspect of green building from the resource conservation angle is to ask: What do the future occupants get out of it? If the answer is, they get a chance to live in a healthy space, without inhaling toxic particles and getting sick, then it's an IAQ feature. If the answer is "They get to save money on utilities, or do less maintenance over the years," I'd put it in the green building camp." Does the distinction really matter? The rivers that flow from the Himalayas—including the Mekong, Indus, Brahmaputra, Yellow, and Yangtze— play critical roles in meeting the energy, water, and food security needs of hundreds of millions of people across Asia. These countries depend on these shared water resources for future growth and prosperity— but the long-term viability of current plans for developing vital sectors is coming under question. Climate change, growing populations, expanding economies, and ongoing migration and urbanization already place significant pressures on policymakers striving to meet their societies’ rising food, water, and energy needs. On Earth Day 2015, the Stimson Center examined the current situation, present projections, emerging challenges, and potential responses for countries in the region endeavoring to ensure food, water, and energy security in the face of these growing challenges.

This story gives a little background about my activities in Kyrgyzstan as a Boren Fellow. In April 2015, I took a little road trip with my colleague, Bilimbek, to Naryn oblast. As part of an environmental education program we are helping to pilot--the KMEECS project--we visited 15 schools in 5 days and explained the project to school directors and teachers. This story was produced for the #IDSP15 Intercultural Digital Storytelling Project for the Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.

"Today we celebrate Earth Day. I exhort everyone to see the world through the eyes of God the creator. The Earth is an environment to be safeguarded, a garden to be cultivated. The relationship of mankind with nature should not be guided by greed, by manipulation and by exploitation, but it must preserve the divine harmony that exists between creatures and creation with the logic of respect and care, so that it can be put to the service of our brothers, and also future generations." http://www.connect4climate.org/resources/globalcitizen2015earthday

The Irmãos Fredi Fuel Switching Project involved converting a ceramic manufacturing plant in Brazil to use renewable biomass instead of unsustainably harvested wood from local forests. In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the project protects the valuable local ‘Cerrado’ forest, and provides substantial benefits for employees and the local community.
