Perceptions of krill are changing. Many people who know their importance regard them as charismatic. Krill are not aimless drifters in the sea or simply food for whales. They are purposeful, beautiful and playful creatures with interesting and important behaviors. Krill sequester C02 that is absorbed into the ocean from our atmosphere. Their well-being is threatened by increasing acidity in the ocean which is caused by more C02 than they can deal with. Krill eggs do not hatch in highly acidic water. Krill are unknown to many people and yet their well-being is vital to our own. Krill are central to the marine food web and we are massive consumers of the larger animals that feed on them. We need to care about krill and their habitats in order to care for our selves.
