In preparation for the March for Rights, Respect and Fair Food (March 3 - 17, 2013), the CIW prepared this brief but lively video detailing the roots of the march as well as a brief history of the Campaign in this short multimedia piece. Used in the CIW's weekly meetings leading up to the march, the video is used to inspire "animo" in the community. Animo, while having no ideal translation in English, essentially captures the idea of commitment and spirit, both of which are at the heart of the CIW's community organizing in the farmworker community of Immokalee -- from the glimmers of the Coalition in 1996 to the 200-mile march of 2013.

Trader Joe's refuses to sign the Coalition of Immokalee Workers' (ciw-online.org) fair foods agreement. This agreement would improve the working conditions of the pickers, who face pesticide exposure, low pay, inability to take breaks in the heat, and in some cases, outright enslavement. TJ's response is that they already comply with the spirit of this agreement, but they refuse to make public their suppliers, the wages or conditions of those suppliers, or other necessary information. No third party has been allowed to verify their claims. Please visit ciw-online.org for more information.

We made this short film in Immokalee Florida (where 1/3 of the tomatoes in our grocery stores are grown). We spent a day with Lupe Gonzalo, a tomato picker and organizer for CIW (Coalition of Immokalee Workers). The Coalition is fighting to change the way our country's tomato laborers are treated, as well as raise their wages by implementing a 1 penny per pound increase of picked tomatoes. Many companies (McDonalds) are working with CIW, but some are holding out (Publix, Chipotle). Please watch and share this short film about Lupe's life. Most likely, there is a wonderful person just like her picking the tomatos you buy at the grocery store. www.theperennialplate.com

This afternoon, Reverend Billy of the Church of Stop Shopping from New York made an appearance at the Albert Heijn Food Plaza in Amsterdam, calling on Ahold to take measures against the exploitation of tomato pickers in Florida.
