            • mirrored video installation

              from Chip Wardale / Added

This film is a combination of clips from the six film/audio pieces I made to simultaneously run within the installation The Perpetual Light Machine, and actual footage of the mirrored viewing spaces from the installation. The six mirrored spaces are arranged in a circular space of 2.4m width, each enclosed in a segment or capsule and viewed through portals. The image above is taken showing the rim of one portal, each segment has either three or four portals. See images of The Perpetual Light Machine here http://www.autonomousblack.com/the-perpetual-light-machine. The segments each have a stereo sound system, playing the soundtrack of the film in that mirrored space. Each piece is designed to work in its own right, but also as a component of the overall composition. The six looping films can be started at any point as only one track has a repeated rhythm. The films content reflects the overall theme of the collaborative installation, but also works as a solitary film/audio composition. I used the creation of this work as an opportunity to play with sound and vision relevant to a longstanding association with industry and engineering, in my life as a metalworker. I have been hanging around mechanical engineering since I started work at 15. Two of the films contain footage of the machine shop on Cockatoo Island, Sydney where I completed my apprenticeship in the early eighties. Another contains abstracted footage from artworks at the Sydney Biennale on the island. Archival footage is largely from the Prelinger Archive, though I also used Mechanical Principles (1930) by Ralph Steiner, and a collection of Paul Irvings 16mm and 8mm films (which we projected onto my curtains, ran backwards and upside down, fed through projectors badly etc, some films were barely watchable but made for great textures).
