              Thanks for tuning in to this tutorial. Today we’re going to talk about something all college students struggle with – stress and time management. The content of today’s tutorial comes from the University of Georgia’s University Health Center AND San Jose State University’s Business School. So what is stress? Stress is defined as a response to a demand placed upon you. Positive stress is that extra burst of adrenaline that helps you finish your final paper, perform well in sports, or meet any challenge. If you cannot return to a relaxed state, then the stress becomes negative stress. Side effects of stress include headache, fear or sadness, and increased anxiety. The key to managing stress in school, work, and life is to adopt a healthy lifestyle. A healthy lifestyle includes: A positive attitude and spirituality, Healthy eating and physical activity, Relaxation and sleep, Avoiding certain substances, and money and time management. I’m going to go over all these parts of a healthy lifestyle, but we will concentrate on how you can manage your time to help you succeed and minimize stress in your classes as a Bryan College student. Have you ever noticed how the exact same situation can stress one person out, while it might not affect another person at all? The way you think about things makes a difference in your response. Try to be positive in your thoughts and do not be your own worst critic. Spirituality is perhaps the most important part of life that can restore your sense of balance and perspective. Take a break from overwork and overconsumption to focus on what really matters in life – your relationship with God, spending time in His Word, nurturing your family’s faith life, and serving the needy in your community. To avoid stress, you should also make sure to take care of your body. Eat nutrient-rich foods and take a daily vitamin. Avoid substances like tobacco and alcohol. Spend at least 20-30 minutes in physical activity every day to boost your energy, ability to concentrate, and ability to fight off illnesses. Eating the right foods and getting enough exercise can also help you sleep better. If you find that you can’t sleep because of anxiety, find ways to relax before you go to bed. Establish a regular sleep routine. Track your spending to avoid stress and anxiety over money. This will help you understand how much you actually spend on housing, utilities, food, textbooks, transportation, clothes, entertainment, and other expenses. Keep a regular budget and reevaluate it. Can you add to your resources with part-time work? Can you eliminate luxuries or the frequency of certain expenses? Consider using a debit card rather than a credit card so that you will only spend what you have. Finally, as a student, you need to establish good time management practices if you are to succeed in your classes and avoid unnecessary stress. This is especially true for working adults who need to balance schoolwork with a full-time job, family, and other responsibilities. I’m going to give you 7 tips on how to manage time spent on your schoolwork so you can get ahead and keep striving toward your goal. First, be organized. Have an organized work space, and use an appointment calendar to keep track of your classes, meetings, and tasks. Second, plan ahead. Determine how long your tasks will take, and break down large tasks into smaller ones. Third, prioritize your tasks. Use an A-B-C rating system, where A tasks have the highest priority. Make sure you set short- and long-term goals so that you make a little progress on big assignments every day. Fourth, avoid overload. Include time for rest and relaxation in your schedule, as part of the healthy lifestyle we talked about. This may mean you have to say “no” to certain activities. Take short breaks when you study. Fifth, study effectively. Read the syllabus as soon as you can for due dates, and don’t procrastinate! Also make sure to study smart. Read for comprehension, not to get through the pages. Ask questions while you do your work, not just before an exam. Being engaged in class and in your homework will help you be more prepared for big exams. Sixth, be flexible. Know how to rearrange your schedule in case of a personal emergency. Know who to ask for help. At Bryan College, your student services advisor and academic support coordinator are here to help you through thick and thin. Finally, have a vision. Don’t lose sight of why you are in school. Remember the big picture, and have a positive attitude. If you manage your time and life a healthy lifestyle, you can achieve your goals!
