1. Alwyn Collinson: 'Realtime World War II'

from The Lost Lectures / Added

Alwyn Collinson is an Oxford history graduate who began a 6 year project to tweet every day of the second World War with events as they happened 72 years ago. The project @RealTimeWWII, now 9 months in and with nearly a quarter of a million followers, has become something of a twitter phenomenon. It covers major military and political developments, eyewitness testimony from the battlefield, contemporary photography and newsreel footage all from the perspective of real people who lived it. In this incredibly powerful and compelling talk, he discusses the significance of his project in helping people connect and empathise with history through the people that lived (and died) during World War II: the importance of breaking the 'comfortable distance' between the modern world and historic events so as to understand and to learn from them . He discusses how the most horrific events in history turned people into mere numbers and how it is our duty to turn these numbers back into people.

          • Captain Stan's Foo Foo Band

            from Barry O'Brien / Added

Foo Foo is here! Daisy Nell’s new children’s book, Captain Stan’s Foo Foo Band, is now available and ready for children of all ages. The story is, like all of Daisy Nell’s stories, is partly based on genuine local lore coupled with an imaginary scenario. In this, her third book, Captain Stan is looking forward to a musical evening with his mates on board his schooner when several mishaps cause him to nearly miss his own party. Based on the Gloucester Harbor of today, the term “foo foo” is from the old days of wooden whaling ships when crew from ports around the world worked together, and often played music when it was time to have a little fun. The French word “fou”, meaning foolish, was soon adapted to become “foo foo”, to indicate a band of musicians who would pull together instruments that were fashioned out of whatever was on hand on the ship, plus some real fiddles, banjos or mandolins. In the story, Captain Stan likes to use the old term foo foo band, but more than that, he liked to just get together with his crew and play foo foo, belting out the old tunes and dances. This video captures the joy and spirit of performance by the real-life characters of the Foo Foo band. Daisy Nell's Book, illustrated by George Ulrich of Marblehead, MA, includes a music CD of the Foo Foo song, performed here, plus a link to a video of a square dance written by Nell for the Foo Foo crew. Daisy Nell Collinson is a familiar voice on the North Shore music scene. She is known for her broad repertoire of traditional folk, chanteys, and contemporary songs. Her husband, Capt. Stan, adds his guitar and dobro to Daisy's banjo and guitar. Stan Collinson started out in high school folk groups and moved on to a performing duo in college with mandolin titan Taylor Armerding of Northern Lights.
