Referencing historic satellites, antennas, and other technologies of communication, All Appears Orange investigates disaster and warning systems. A series of sculptures were created utilizing orange marking flags as the primary material. These flags are generally used to mark survey points as well as denote underground telecommunication utilities such as telephone, alarm, signal or conduit lines. Through multiple performances these absurd objects were humorously employed to both signal and explore ideas around agency, safety, and environmental change. A recent international report stated that the seeming increase of natural disasters is “the beginnings of a new kind of future in which mega-disasters are going to be more frequent.” All Appears Orange examines what is being lost in transmission as we globally begin to live this “new future.” Many thanks to ART342 for their generous support and a special thanks to Amanda Poulson for video and performance contributions. www.kristacaballero.com

Third year free project @ Hanzehogeschool Groningen, Communication systems, major Gaming Client: Technasium, Zernike College, Haren, the Netherlands(secondary school) Assignment: design an educative game targeted at first grade secondary school students to explain the basics of a plan of action. Use the traffic project as a base, with preservation of the tasks, group members and time necessary for each task to be completed. The green light assessment was the most difficult part to program. Solution: the first four parts of the game are about getting to know the project and the games' interaction. Then, or directly from the start(if they choose so) players can start creating their plan of action, in which the green light assessment helps them to learn how to create a perfect plan of action. Concept: Sven Uilhoorn & Dave Hopgood Illustration & background design: Sven Uilhoorn Programming: David Hopgood (a lot of programming..) Text: Sven Uilhoorn Target group alignment and usability: Sven Uilhoorn Thanks go out to Fred Norden and Erwin van Dijk for their support over at the Zernike College! Motorola needed to reveal their new Mototrbo technology in a very approachable and understandable communication. Once they contacted Eric Mower & Associates they in turn contacted me to develop this piece. As with most of these types of projects, once a script is set, I develop a look & feel specifically for the piece, then sketch storyboards for the client to react to, make modifications, develop digital storyboards at the specified requirements, create final assets and finally give direction for the animation production. In this case EMA's Creative Director, Rob Rayfield directed in-house video guru Matt Petrocci. The end result: Motorola was very pleased.

The Special Operation Forces use a sophisticated radio communication system when they are out in the field. They can communicate via voice and email with Joint Base Station (JBS) operators anywhere in the world at anytime, updating higher ups on their missions in real-time. Both the men in the field and those at Forward Operating Bases need to learn how to use the JBS radio communication system. The problem is that the entire system is comprised of multiple cases, radios, antennas, laptops, and other items that can be configured in a myriad of ways. Getting all of that equipment in one room happens rarely, so how can people learn how to use the system? Taking all of the tech manual information we turned it into a serious game that puts the user in various “real-world” scenarios. Users are challenged to setup and operate the communication system and can actually simulate choosing and opening cases, connecting cables and configuring the system with the interactive game. Their progress is tracked for certification at the end.

High frequency radios are said to be more reliable than Manpacks. The amplifiers and high power antennas equipped in these devices make them very powerful. This device also uses voice encryption to make communication safer and more secure. http://www.dxradiosystems.com/

Marcopolis.net Video Interview with Ahmed I. Rajab, General Manager of Jumhouria Bank, the largest bank in Libya, also available here http://www.marcopolis.net/banking-infrastructure-in-libya-building-an-efficient-and-secure-banking-infrastructure-1805.htm One of the main challenges in Libyan banking system is the banking infrastructure. For a country to effectively attract foreign investment and boost domestic economic growth, a sound banking infrastructure is a must. According to Ahmed Rajab, "This is the major problem for the banking sector and not just the banking sector, but for the government itself and any company or ministry. Unfortunately, we have a lack of proper communication in the country itself. I joined the bank just one year ago and unfortunately when I came here, most of the problems stemmed from the core banking system which caused problems on a daily basis. We also faced daily problems with our customers who think the failure was on our side, but unfortunately it is out of our control because it’s related to the poor communications system in Libya."
