1. Lambaye Learning Center Fly-Through

    from BKSK Architects Added 20 0 0

Take a butterfly's eye view of the Lambaye Learning Center, designed by BKSK Architects with the people of Lambaye and Students for Senegal. The programmatic core of the 4,000 square foot project is a community library, but its flexibly designed indoor-outdoor spaces support a range of activities in the rural Senegalese village, from cooking to theater to daycare. In addition to being socially relevant to the community, the facilities are designed to tread lightly on the environment and be economically sustainable. A few strategies supporting this goal are the use of photovoltaic panels for powering electronics such as ceiling fans and computers, a series of water collection points, locally-sourced building materials and construction methods, revenue-generating cell phone charging stations, and a business plan for renting the space out for weddings and private events. Key members of the highly collaborative cross-Atlantic team include village leaders, local craftsmen, an inspired (and inspiring) NYC-area high school chemistry teacher who is originally from Lambaye, an energetic group of his current and former students, and a pro bono design team at BKSK. For more information, contact Gisela Garrett at ggarrett@bksk.com. This fly-through is current as of May, 2015.

      • PLAYscape: Students Building Dreams

        from George Elvin Added 106 0 0

In the Spring of 2014 I led a fourth year architecture studio at Ball State University where students designed and built a PLAYscape for a new pocket park in the Historic Meridian Park neighborhood in Indianapolis. The playscape provides a structure that supports creative play, environmental learning, and nature play. The PLAYscape was constructed in pieces in the Ball State Design-Build Lab and installed in Indianapolis at the end of the semester. Our work included numerous field trips and meetings with residents and other community, industry and academic partners. This project was a unique opportunity to work with design, materials and construction techniques in the service of the community. Our objectives were to serve the community and develop a deeper understanding of the design process through the integration of material and construction experience. Collaboration with each other and with community, industry and academic partners was a critical feature of our work.

Design project by Santiago Ferreira. Recording, sharing, and listening oral messages about what we like about our city is a simple and active way to define those specific things that identify ourselves within a community and with the city we live in. This project is an effort to bring back oral tradition, using it as a tool to connect citizens from Bogotá with themselves and with the city they live in.
