      • Project002: NYC

In 2009, 100cameras partnered with New Life of NYC, an inner-city community center that focuses on improving a kid’s education and plugging them into an extracurricular activity that encourages character development. It is centered on empowering the many students on the Lower East Side that live in low-income housing and therefore may lack access to important resources and proper education. 100cameras supports New Life’s work by helping to provide educational tools for over 40 youth that participate daily in the After-school Learning Center at New Life. Prior to the 100cameras course, our students identified the complicated dichotomy of being surrounded by the extremes found in society. Everything they experience within their city is often in contrast to what they see in their own everyday lives around their neighborhood. From advertisements on billboards to street fashion to television talking about the latest trends, our students can feel pressured to have it all. Yet they can feel limited or alone when it comes to setting desires and dreams into motion. It’s important to note that the disconnect is not that they didn't already know what they would like to change about their current circumstances or what they hope for their future, it was more that they sometimes felt overwhelmed, unsure, or defeated for how to make a plan. Ownership is a powerful tool to unlock potential and help goals start to feel within reach. One of our students, Danna, went on to get her AA college degree and is the first in her family to do so. She now teaches in the same After-school Learning Center she once benefitted from, and her passion is to show kids that they can do it, too. At her graduation celebration at New Life, she shared, “This is for me, and this is for them.” Learn more at www.100cameras.org Filmmaker: Ellen Wildhagen (www.ellenwildhagen.com) Composer: Tony Anderson (www.tonyandersonmusic.com)

Introducing the work of SIM in the Philippines. Music: "Darger's Strawberry" by Exteenager (Subtitles are available for this video - use the "CC" option in the play bar) "Imagine your country is a huge cookie. Now imagine somebody picks it up and crumbles it into more than 7,000 pieces and sprinkles it over the Pacific Ocean. That’s the Philippines. Of course, they’re islands not cookie crumbs but Filipinos, who’ve been named Asia’s happiest citizens several times, live like their country is a giant dessert. As they love to say, “it’s more fun in the Philippines!” But they have their troubles, too... Super storms, earthquakes, chronic poverty and political unrest continually test the nation’s mettle. Of the Philippines’ 100 million residents, four in five call themselves Roman Catholics, with two percent Evangelicals. Yet a strong minority religion in the Southern islands continues to resist the colonial faith after hundreds of years. Lately many of them have begun gathering in big cities where they can work and study. Our growing multi-cultural teams are stepping into a centuries-wide cultural divide to intentionally do life alongside these little communities. Bit by bit they’re living out the love of God through free children’s education, meals, vocational training and an investment in local arts and music. We hope to inspire a passion for literacy – maybe, someday, for Scripture – to introduce a Christianity that doesn’t come with colonization and inspire local churches to embrace these minorities around them. Life in the Philippines might not always be a piece of cake, but we dream of a time when every last crumb will be united in worshipping the same Lord."
