===Title=== Reflecting Music Through Movement: A Body-Syntonic Approach to Playing [with] the Piano ===Thesis Supervisor=== Hiroshi Ishii Professor of Media Arts & Sciences Massachusetts Institute of Technology ===Committee=== Kenneth Perlin Professor of Computer Science New York University Edith Ackermann Professor Developmental Psychology Université d'Aix en Provence, France Visiting Professor of Architecture Massachusetts Institute of Technology Donal Fox Composer and Pianist ===Abstract=== This dissertation introduces and examines methods for the capture and reproduction of music on the piano that maintains a tight coupling between the body and the physical instrument. Music playing originates in the body, which plays a central role in both performance and pedagogy. However, technology for the capture and reproduction of music has largely ignored the intricate relationship between body and instrument in the making and appreciation of music. Drawing from research in telepresence, tangible interfaces, and augmented reality, I propose to bring the movement of the human body back into the picture, literally and metaphorically, by using different projection techniques on a player piano, designed to synchronize image and sound with the dynamic form of the moving keys. I here focus on two main projects: MirrorFugue and Andante, both inspired by reflections on the surface of a lacquered grand piano (in this case the vertical pane adjacent to the keyboard). MirrorFugue simulates the presence of a virtual pianist whose reflection is actually playing the physically moving keys, thus encouraging anyone to take the seat left empty on the piano, feel the music as if in the doppelgänger’s shoes, and possibly playing along. Andante, for its part, visually echoes the bodily sensation of a pianist’s fingers tapping the keys. A series of strokes in a musical phrase appears in the form of miniature light silhouettes walking and dancing on the keys. Drawing on human empathy and the importance of moving between sensory modalities and shifting standpoints, both installations are designed as immersive “sandboxes” for the playful exploration of musical ideas, embodied cognition, and the role of motion and emotion in making sense of our experience. Both have applications for human learning and enjoyment, which proposed work seeks to assess. To demonstrate Andante and MirrorFugue's usefulness in learning beyond correct notes alone, I propose comparative studies with control interfaces representing typical current methods. To clarify the emotional experience afforded by these interfaces, I describe planned studies employing a combination of observation, physiological measurements (heart rate, breathing, facial expression etc.), and interviews. Virtual Reality, which can be referred to as immersive multimedia or computer-simulated life, replicates an environment that simulates physical presence in places in the real world or imagined worlds. Virtual reality can recreate sensory experiences, which include virtual taste, sight, smell, sound, and touch. Most up to date virtual reality environments are displayed either on a computer screen or with special stereoscopic displays, and some simulations include additional sensory information and emphasise real sound through speakers or headphones targeted towards VR users. Some advanced, haptic, systems now include tactile information, generally known as force feedback in medical, gaming and military applications.
