http://www.computerrors.com/computer-terms/what-is-bios-basic-input-output-system-computer-terms/ What is BIOS? BIOS stands for Basic Input Output System and is what starts up first when you turn your computer on. The BIOS is really just software that's embedded in a chip on your system's motherboard or main system board where all of its components are connected to each other. This software is responsible for checking to make sure things like computer memory, processor and others are functioning properly, then allows the OS or Operating System to take over and continue the boot up process. This error-checking phase of BIOS is called POST, Power On Self Test, and is the beep that you hear when powering on your PC. If BIOS detects an error or something wrong with a component, you'll hear a different set of beeps. A single one is normal, but errors will have their own unique code or sequence of beeps depending on the type of problem detected. You can also enter the graphical portion of your BIOS in order to change settings that control a wide range of options in your computer that can have a huge effect on performance and how your computer starts up. You should always be careful when entering your BIOS as changing a setting to a wrong value can cause problems including not booting into Windows or other operating systems at all. http://www.computerrors.com/computer-terms/computer-terms-ram-random-access-memory/ What is RAM? RAM stands for Random Access Memory and its purpose is to transfer information back and forth between the computer processor and other devices in your system. RAM is a volatile type of memory, meaning that any data you send to it is only temporary and is lost when you turn off your computer. This is perfectly normal because your system has a hard drive which stores this information in the form of files until you erase them or move them manually. The benefit of having RAM is that it's very fast and can transfer information in quick chunks from the brain of your PC to other parts that need the info. When your computer doesn't have enough RAM or RAM that's slow, performance bottlenecks can occur that make your PC sluggish or unusable in some cases. RAM comes in many speeds, sizes, and configurations, so you need to use the right kind for your particular PC.
