... a beautifully blue-dressed lady dances (not literally, but sportfully) with an equally blue ball, confronting the daunting nature and scale of this court, sometimes taking excruciatingly long breaths in anticipation of her next attack- Nick Normal Andrew Duggan’s work addresses what he calls “the space between tradition and contemporary space and time.” For him, language and location are key elements; whether in New York or the Gaeltacht, Duggan discusses the tradition he is in, walking the fine line between definitions - Karlyn De Jongh. court is a visual art project in New York City, hosted by The Irish Arts Centre with visual artist Andrew Duggan. It uses the cast concrete Irish handball alley and it’s interesting migration to the five boroughs in NYC as a context, in which to visually explore urban/rural congregation and cultural transmission. The project began with an installation at IAC and will result in a public art event in the neighboring Hells Kitchen ball park. seen here is one of the video pieces [pace II, featuring dancer Adrienne Heaslip] First presented at the Irish Arts Centre New York City, in March 2011 as part of Culture Ireland’s Imagine Ireland’s programme of Art in America.

Conflex is a flexible concrete composite which was created as part of my fourth year Industrial Design major project. The year long project involved challenging the behaviour and performance of a wide variety of concrete mixes. Once a sound understanding of these materials was obtained I began creating 'Conflex.' Being lighter, having greater crack resistance, flexing capabilities and far greater tensile strength than common concrete, 'Conflex' is ideal for use in earthquake affected areas, marine applications, civil engineering, defence applications and small scale construction. A polyurethane reinforcing bar particularly suited for use in 'Conflex' was also designed. The reinforcing bar offers additional strength for larger jobs and is less susceptible to corrosion than common steel reinforcement.
