Kinshasa, “Kin la Belle” is a city of 10 million people without a single cinema theatre. Trying to understand what brought in the past decade the fall of an industry and what impact has this had on the audience, a month long research in Kinshasa has brought stories, opinions and nostalgia through the lens. The story of a city, the apartheid era, the neo colonialism of Mobutu, unfolds through the fate of its cinemas. With interviews to filmmakers, cinema owners, government officials and fans the picture becomes clear. The Minister of Culture tells us that cinema is finally on the government agenda, the President of the National Counsel for Audiovisual explains how he tries to regulate broadcast and stop the widespread piracy whilst entrepreneurs with their VHS pop-up cinemas keep the passion alive in the townships. ‘La Belle At The Movies’ celebrates the Kinshasa cowboys who found their identity in the Spaghetti Westerns shown in the 1960s as well as narrates the cultural opposition by preachers who have turned theatres into churches. Interviews and lyric imagery of Kinshasa make this film a testimony to a moment in time where the film industry feels orphaned but lives in hope for a brighter future.

I have created this film in response to an incredible documentary i watched. VIRUNGA [Von Einsiedel, 2014] highlights the effects SOCO a British listed oil company are having on an already unstable region in the Congo. I want this film to influence others like the documentary influenced me. Awareness needs to be raised.
