Crystle Martin, Ph.D., presented "Youth, Connected Learning, and the Role of Libraries," on February 10 at 3 p.m. in 307 Manning Hall. Abstract: Youth learn valuable skills and information not just in the confines of the classroom, but in a variety of out-of-school learning environments as well. Whether it is in the context of an online professional wrestling fan forum or in a workshop at a library, these experiences are important to a youth’s overall learning ecology. Many youth struggle to connect the unique and valuable experiences they have outside of school with their in-school activities, creating a gap in which they are not recognized for the full extent of their skill set. Libraries and librarians are uniquely situated to support youth in bridging the gap, helping them create their personal connected learning environments. Through examples from a variety of online, afterschool, and in library data, I will layout the importance of connected learning and what librarians can do to facilitate connected learning for youth. Bio: Crystle Martin (@CrystleM) is a Postdoctoral Research Scholar at the Digital Media and Learning Research Hub at the University of California, Irvine. Her research explores youth and connected learning in online information and library settings. She is currently researching implementing Scratch in underserved libraries, as a way to get more STEM programming in the hands of non-dominant youth. She received her PhD in 2012 from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her dissertation research was published as a book in 2014, titled “Voyage Across a Constellation of Information: Information Literacy in Interest-Driven Learning Communities.”
