Megalomania perceives the city in total construction. The built environment is explored as a labyrinth of architecture that is either unfinished, incomplete or broken. Megalomania is a response to the state of infrastructure and capital, evolving the appearance of progress into the sublime. Constructed predominantly using 3d Studio Max and rendered with Vray. Organic movement sequences were originally filmed on a Canon 5D mkII, tracked in PF Track and developed in CG. Demolition created using Rayfire. All compositing done in Adobe After Effects, edited in Adobe Premiere Pro. Audio recorded and coordinated using Adobe Audition. Or, how to spend $1 million in just over 12 minutes (actually, about 3 1/2 days). [CORRECTION: I previously had said $3 million, which is what I had heard on the streets. I've since been contacted by a representative of the SFMTA who assures me that the cost was in fact $1 million.] This is a time-lapse video showing the replacement of the MUNI tracks in front of my house. Demolition began on the evening of Friday, October 8, and work continued around the clock until early in the morning of Tuesday, October 12. The MUNI folks were nice enough to distribute earplugs to those of us in the immediate vicinity. This was shot using a Canon A590, with CHDK installed (a firmware replacement for Canon cameras that enables all sorts of additional features). An image was captured approximately every 15 seconds.

If only it was this quick! Filmed over several months using mainly Canon cameras, this video uses time lapse, time remapping and real time shots. Not the easiest thing to shoot as most of the time I was standing where it was safe and in no ones way rather than where I'd get the best shot. 95% of the builders were really great and made the job a lot easier Had to pass an official health and safety exam to work on the site so now I have a real qualification.

A local newspaper described Toronto as a "City of Mass Construction." Apparently, there were 132 condos being built in Toronto towards the end of 2011, and one of them started mushrooming furiously right in front of me! So, I thought I'd try to document it as best I could...

A visual tale of Singapore as it awakens to a new day. Shot with the Canon 5DMKII using Time Lapse Photography, this short film was shot entirely in Singapore during the month of April 2010. During the filming I used a Canon 24mm Shift & Tilt lens, a 100-400mm Zoom, a 24-105mm zoom, a 50mm f1.4 and a Lee 10 stop filter. These filters are glass and while fragile, deliver a really nice clean image with very little colour cast. For more information about this Short Film, please see my blog http://www.karlvonmoller.com/blog/2010/04/20/singapore-awakens-a-time-lapse-experiment/ For now, please enjoy "Singapore Awakens" and feel free to comment.
