In one-on-one interviews, and during panel discussions, Geoprofessional Business Association (GBA, formerly ASFE) founders respond to questions posed by then-GBA Executive Vice President John Bachner. Together, they explore the roots of leadership, with GBA leaders responding to questions like: -You are or were a leader. Why? What (and/or who) did you have that it took? -As a professional in business, what were the most important lessons you learned? -Who was your hero and why? -What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were 25? 35? 45? Each of the interviews and panel discussions occurred during GBA's national meeting in October 2003, in Monterey, California. Each interview and panel is presented on its own. This is the first of two Founders Panel Discussions. [Note: This video was produced when the Geoprofessional Business Association was known as ASFE. What can you do to come out of an economic downturn stronger than when you went into it? That’s the focus of the October 13, 2000 Fall Meeting presentation that many Geoprofessional Business Association (GBA, formerly ASFE) members categorized as “one of the best ever.” The speaker was GBA Past President Donald V. Roberts, P.E., an extraordinarily insightful and experienced engineer/businessmen. The quality of the video isn’t great, but the audio is crisp, and the message is extremely valuable. Mr. Swidey discusses his best-selling book, Trapped under the Sea, which recounts the factors leading up to and following a major construction accident that took several workers’ lives in the nearly 10-mile long Deer Island Tunnel. The workers were commercial divers who were tasked with removing 55 large safety plugs that had been installed at the end of the tunnel, which lies hundreds of feet below the ocean floor, and carries up to 1 billion gallons of wastewater from the Boston wastewater treatment plant out into the deep Atlantic waters of Massachusetts Bay.
