    • Musee du Louvre, Fortress of Beauty

      from Marcus Chun Added

Located in the center of Paris, the Louvre was originally built as a fortress in the late 12th century under Philip II. (its stone brick foundations are visible today in the basement of the museum). It was later converted into the official residential palace, undergoing many changes over the years until Louis XIV decided to move to Versailles in 1682. During the French Revolution, the National Assembly decreed that the Louvre should be used as a museum to display the nation's masterpieces. The museum opened its doors to the public on August 1793 with an exhibition of 537 paintings and the rest is, more or less, history. In the 1980's, it was with some controversy that the glass pyramid design by Chinese American architect I.M. Pei was greeted by the French public. However, the forward thinking of President Francois Mitterrand with his Grands Projects prevailed, and in 1989 a new architectural icon was born. One of the world's 2 or 3 greatest museums, and at a head count of 9.7 million in 2012 THE most visited, the Louvre holds 35,000 artworks displayed over an area of 652,300 square feet (so forgive me if I've left out an item or two). This footage having been shot several years ago, some of the artworks may have since been moved: the rooms may have changed, but the suspects remain the same. ;-) More recent music by the superb Florian Fricke and the wondrous Michael Stearns, the rest from various classical sources.

Please note this is a clip of the full video and it is shown small here because it is usually displayed vertically in full HD and in black shadow box framed LED monitors. 2013, wooden frame, 24 x 33 x 4 inches Mining the University of New Mexico Art Museum’s extensive drawing and print collection, I appropriated images of work by Corot, Daubigny, and Edward Skeats to create five new video pieces. Using green screen techniques, characters appear on the screen to erase, alter and reveal these iconic artworks. My vision relates the interdependence of plants, animals and humans with the interrelationships of art forms through contemporary media. Informed by early film history, these works are captivating scenarios that allude to childhood fables and folklore.

from Loch Ness Productions Added 104 1 0

Astronomers are discovering extrasolar planets at a dizzying rate. To date there are more than 160 confirmed exoplanets, and more than 3500 more planet candidates. The search for planets around distant stars is the heart of "Extrasolar Planets--discovering new worlds". This exciting new show describes how astronomers search for planets circling other stars. It explains the two main methods they use: studying the minute "wobbles" of stars and detecting flickers in a star's brightness. Only a few Earth-like planets have been found, and as of yet, no extraterrestrial life has been found on any of the worlds discovered so far. Yet, it's likely to be only a matter of time before a world teeming with life shows up in astronomy surveys of stars in our galactic neighborhood. "Extrasolar Planets--discovering new worlds" is an imaginative exploration into the discoveries of new worlds beyond our Sun, the possibilities that they might be habitable, and the chances that any of those worlds harbor intelligent life. With the success of such planet finder missions as Kepler and CoROT, detecting alien life may no longer be the stuff of science fiction! Produced by Albedo Fulldome Distributed by Loch Ness Productions More information about this fulldome show, and access to a preview of the entire show, can be found on the Loch Ness Productions Website: http://www.lochnessproductions.com/shows/antares/epd.html ===== ABOUT THIS FULLDOME TRAILER ===== Fulldome shows are meant to be projected onto a hemispherical dome surface typically found in planetarium theaters. Viewed on a flat screen, the imagery looks curved or warped at the edges; when projected using fisheye-lens equipment, the images look correct. This HD video was cropped from spherical-mirror warped dome masters to highlight the movie's theater-front sweet spot. This preview is intended primarily to provide a taste of the show's content to planetarium professionals looking for shows to display in their theaters.
