"SIN", 2010 30ft Projection / Variable, 2:20 minutes SIN takes place during the time when the singularity has or is about to occur. An unidentified protagonist sprays graffiti, across a background of shifting images. The viewer is left to question whether this action is anti-social propaganda - or - the spread of a new religion on an advanced digital billboard. Is this character pro or con to the concept/paradigmatic shift; an anarchist or a religious zealot? The viewer knows that it is human-like but is unsure of its gender, race, and cybernetic vs. human origin. It could be that the statement is meant in a way, as to invoke fear, or as a statement by some militant movement. I leave this open to interpretation. My goal is to create a catalyst for dialogue and manipulation, as fiction - spoken in metaphor - can lead to insight. My work grows out of an ongoing dialog about contemporary theories in science and physics. I am creating a series of large-scale paintings, rooting my analysis in these new forms of knowledge. The submitted work is based upon findings is these fields of study. We are transitioning into the era of Genetic Engineering, Nanotechnology, and Artificial Intelligence. Modern physicists are hypothesizing multiple and parallel universes, higher dimensional space, and contemplate the theory that everything is a manifestation of information. I am interested in re-conceptualizing the dynamics of information, and connecting forms of knowledge through an artistic practice. How do we construct visual representation in this new paradigm? We are approaching the epoch of the merger of technology and human intelligence. My work considers this merger and what it will mean within the context of visual art. My recent work is grounded in fiction. Working with the conversation about post-humanism and the Singularity as narrative, I have been remixing contemporary ideas in Science into visual poetry. We are approaching the epoch of the merger of technology and human intelligence. Some scientists and sociologists have referred to this as a Singularity. In other words, when we create machines that are as biologically intelligent as humans, the machine-intelligence will perpetually and exponentially inform itself. At a meeting of intelligence, there is a possibility that the human biology will merge with machine. Mathematician and computer scientist, Vernor Vinge, suggests that this is possible within the next thirty years; we will indeed have the technological means to create superhuman intelligence. Vinge hypothesizes further, “Shortly thereafter, the human era will be ended.” This idea is the starting point for the video “SIN (the Singularity Is Near)”. Using Ray Kurzweil’s book title by the same name, as a warning inscription, the video points to a futurist’s apocalyptic scenario.

                      Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
