Ellen Mackin doesn’t let an office job slow her down. “I bring my sneakers to work and when they relieve me for lunch my sneakers go on and I go for about a half an hour,” says Ellen Mackin. She is part of the walking revolution. Step by step bettering her health. Ellen wears a device that tracks her progress. “Well, let’s see right now I have in over 7,000 steps today. So that’s pretty good,” says Mackin. Experts believe anything that promotes activity is a move in the right direction. “The devices that you can wear, whether it’s, you know, one of these bracelets or a pedometer or something that helps you to track your activity, I think that’s great,” says Dr. Sal Lacagnina, who is the vice president of health and wellness for Lee Memorial Health System. Walking may be one of the most underestimated physical activities. It strengthens bones, improves heart health and promotes weight loss. Studies find it on par with running while being more accessible to more people. “We have such an epidemic of weight problems and chronic disease with diabetes and high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease- and so this is one easy way to really get back on track with your health,” says Dr. Lacagnina. A new spin on an age-old activity is watching your progress as you travel through the day. It’s helping Ellen pick up the pace. “I guess it makes you accountable,” says Mackin. Gaining momentum, step counting is one movement that may be making Americans healthier.
