Earlier this year, I recorded a "Tombeau pur l’ Empereur Joseph" composed by an unknown Austrian lute master (either Lauffensteiner or Weichenberger). The Tombeau (Allemande) is the first piece of a suite in c minor. With my brand-new 11c baroque lute build by Renatus Lecher (Bremen) I recoded today the Courante of this suite in c minor from the baroque lute manuscript MS 120 (A-Wös 120) of the Austrian State Archive, Vienna. Other pieces will follow over the next weeks - if my workload will allow it.

This week we add another Courante--reminds me of the Corrente that Byron shared a few weeks ago. Maybe Bach had a certain aesthetic for this particular dance when using the minor mode. Very interesting! Also, as mentioned, this Suite calls for the Cello to be tuned differently (scordatura). Instead of the usual A-D-G-C tuning (all strings separated by the interval of a fifth), the A string is tuned down to a G, shrinking the interval to a fourth between the two upper strings (G to D). This gives the instrument a darker sound, and works quite well in the key of C minor. How does it strike you? Do you hear the instrument differently? I enjoy playing this Suite very much, especially with the scordatura--it has always struck me as particularly noble in character, as if Bach were writing dances in honor of a great King or Queen. Recorded Live at Cashmere United Methodist Church in Cashmere, WA.

Another Lively and Bubbling Courante! And how interesting to compare with the C major Courante from last week. But we've been babbling quite enough about dances and tempi, so why not just enjoy the music! Something to look/listen for: Bach originally wrote this Courante for Piccolo cello. Can you see or hear the difference?
