This is an architectural animation of a theater I designed for the Cranbrook Campus near Detroit, MI. This segment shows you the theaters interior with an emphasis and the stage and seating bowls. The design of the theater turned its back on traditional theater design such as proscenium stages or theater in the round, and instead addresses the digital world in which we live today. The entire stage is made up of LED screens that can instantly transport you to anywhere in the world, eliminating the need for creating expensive sets. The building itself has an ETFE skin which can be illuminated in any color or pattern allowing for the entire building to interact with the performance on the stage. Additionally, LED curtains hang throughout the theater allowing for three dimensional imagery and making the back of the house arguably the most desirable seats. The seating bowls also differ from normal seating in a theater. There is no longer front row center, instead three seemingly infinitely thin concrete shells hover inside the building to give the theater a space age design, while using as little material as possible. The building itself features an innovative triangulated design reminiscent to Buckminster Fuller's geodesic domes. With multiple open spaces throughout the building, the performance no longer needs to take place on the main stage or is limited to a single stage. While ETFE is a poor sound barrier and would not work for a theater in an urban setting, this theater was sited in a quiet forested area away from busy roads and other buildings on the campus.
