The international conference was organised to mark the European Year of Creativity and Innovation, and as a prelude to Maastricht’s candidacy for the title of European Capital of Culture in 2018. The morning programme turned the spotlight on four keynote speakers, and the afternoon focused on discussion of four themes: borderless creativity, co-creation and open innovation, places and spaces of creativity, and local creativity. “We need creative minds,” said Limburg’s Executive Councillor for Culture, Odile Wolfs. “There’s enormous value in debating that with one another, and in learning from one another.” Keynote speaker Charles Landry agreed wholeheartedly. “Change your mindset,” he said. “Borders shouldn’t act as boundaries, but instead provide an opening to creativity. Access to a new Amsterdam, where your perfume is French, your tailor is British, the cooks are Italian, the cars German, and everything is organised by the Dutch! We have to generate a culture of creativity. Borderless creativity is meet, talk and play."
