      • Teen Open Studio's Graphic Novel Comics at REACH Studio Art Center - October 2013-March 2014

from REACH Studio Art Center / Added

The initial idea was to create a peer-to-peer experience highlighting social justice issues relevant to situations faced in their daily lives. The final product is a comic book compilation of over a dozen comics written and illustrated by the teens. The TOS Comic Show in REO Town’s Creative Corridor on Thursday, March 20 from 5- 7pm featured two enlarged, framed single comic panels selected by each participant. This panel was also printed on a t-shirt for each teen. Two teens sold work at the event and were given checks for the full amount (one piece for $30, another for $50), and 12 comic books were sold to participants for $5 each. 24 teens participated in the project from October-March, but only 17 teens were able to see it through from beginning to end. The project began with teens interviewing five different community advocates using Flipcams on issues faced by youth in our community. These advocates included the Managing Director for the Equality of Michigan, the Director of Public Policy for ArtServe Michigan, a Prevention Consultant for the Eaton Intermediate School District, a professor from Lansing Community College and a Doctoral Student from the college of Education at MSU. These interviews lead to the decision to create 10 comics featuring the following teen selected topics: gender equality, arts in schools, bullying, LGBTQ community and suicide prevention. Teens were also able to work with guest artists Casey Sorrow, Stephen Thomas and Steven Valenziano throughout the process, along with three lead staff and five volunteers. The full comic book can be viewed here: www.flipsnack.com/FBA69CA6AED/fzpignkk Many thanks to the talented Dan Hartley for the creation of this and many other incredible mini-documentaries for REACH.
