Stephen talks about his Chromeography project, an online archive of chrome lettering affixed to vintage automobiles and electric appliances. These unsung metal emblems and badges are usually overlooked, forgotten, damaged, lost to time or the dump. Chromeography.com answers (and poses) questions about how and why these little pieces of art have changed over the years. It also showcases the kind of thematic curation that has only become possible in a social/digital world.

For some people it is a trouble-maker in German orthography, for some a shortcoming in typography. But to Nadine Roßa it is the most beautiful letter: The German B, what actually is a lower case sharp s. Throughout history no other character has had to put up with so much and almost no other letter has been the subject of so much discussion. Nadine’s surname contains this rare character. That’s the reason why she decided to put some thought into what could be done to place it in a better light.

The Swiss Designer Nicolas Bourquin presents five CI projects he never showed before. The reason: They’ve been submitted during the last 12 month to design competition and had been rejected: Kieler Woche, Region Stuttgart, Fondation Cartier Paris, Campus Bielefeld and Energieberg Georgswerder Hamburg (in cooperation with raumtaktik). His conclusion: no contests because they lead to a financial disaster.

On the evening of 23 Sep 2011, alongside the United Nations General Assembly in New York, the “Logo for Human Rights” initiative unveiled the winner of an international online competition. Some hours before that the organizer of the competition gave insight information to 100 visitors of Creative Morning Berlin: Jovoto CEO Bastian Unterberg and community manager Nadine Freischlad. In May, the initiative issued an international call for logo submissions and invited people to judge them online. The response was impressive: from over 15,000 entries, a prominent jury together with the internet community selected the winning symbol. The new human rights glyph is now available to everyone at no cost as an open source product at www.humanrightslogo.net. The winning design is by 32 years old Predrag Štakić of Serbia.

Art+Com founder Prof Joachim Sauter talks about 3 fascinating kinetic projects he developed for BMW, Otto Bock and Deutsche Bank. BMW: See 714 metal spheres, hanging from thin steel wires attached to individually-controlled stepper motors and covering the area of six square meters, animate a seven minute long mechatronic narrative. Otto Bock: For the World Expo Shanghai 2010 Art+Com interprets the theme of movement with a dynamic yet poetic mirror installation. One hundred prosthetic hands arranged in a matrix revolve around their own vertical axis, the movements being controlled by motors. The mirrors they hold reflect the beam of a floodlight into the room and onto the wall opposite. Deutsche Bank: The Bank’s Logo by Anton Stankowski serves as starting point for the spatial design and is now translated into three-dimensional narrative space.
